Abingdon Gap Shelter, Appalachian Trail Introduce

Abingdon Gap Shelter, located on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail near Shady Valley, TN 37688, is a crucial stop for hikers traversing the iconic trail. While technically a shelter along a long distance hiking trail, it functions as a temporary campground for hikers, and therefore fits within the context of a campground introduction. It serves as a vital resource for thru-hikers and backpackers.

Based on customer reviews, Abingdon Gap Shelter offers key amenities and considerations for hikers:

  • Shelter and Tenting Spaces: The shelter provides basic protection, and there are ample tenting spaces nearby.
  • Water Source: A piped spring is located a steep 0.1-0.2 mile hike down from the shelter. Hikers are advised to stock up on water before arriving, especially when coming from Damascus.
  • Bear Bagging Spots: While low-hanging branches are limited, there are suitable bear bagging spots available with careful searching.
  • Picnic Table: A picnic table is available for hikers.
  • Bug Activity: Expect high bug activity, especially in spring and summer.
  • Bear Activity: This area is known for active bear populations.
  • Proximity to Damascus: It's a popular stop for hikers preparing to enter Damascus, with good tenting spots within 5 miles north.

For local users and those planning sections of the Appalachian Trail, Abingdon Gap Shelter offers essential resources for overnight stays. The shelter and tenting areas provide flexibility, and the water source is critical, though hikers should be prepared for a challenging descent and ascent. The high bear activity necessitates proper food storage and awareness. The location's popularity among thru-hikers highlights its importance as a stopping point.

Hikers should be prepared for the challenges of this location, including the steep water source access and high bug and bear activity. Plan accordingly and pack appropriate gear.

If you're headed to Damascus, enjoy the nice downward slope. If you're coming from Damascus, stock up on water at the water point before getting here. The .1 hike down to water is steep and feels like much longer when you make the .1 climb back out. Water point feels very secluded, not a lot of light, and can host an army of bugs in the spring and summer. Ignore the "Abandon all hope ye who enter here sign" as you go for water. Lots of options for tent and hammock setup if you can't or don't want to be in the shelter. Almost no low hanging branches for bear bags, but there are a few if you look carefully.

Great tenting spaces and a lot of them. Good bear bagging spots. Picnic table. Piped spring a long 0.2 down behind the shelter. A lot of bugs. Most active bear region of our section. Going to be a popular populated spot for thru hikers prepping for Damascus. About 6 good tenting spots just north of here within 5 miles.

Slept well. Water source is a very steep climb down rocky terrain.

Beautiful place with plenty of space for tents. It's flat and open. Shelter is small but nice. Water is a little further than I would like for it to be. Wish I was there now.

Lots of tentsite space for our 'mini bubble' of hikers. Did not use shelter per closure. Those who dared go for water found plenty. No bears. Fyi, for cell service, head north on AT to end of campsites, you will get lucky.
