Ackley Lake West Campground Introduce
Introduction / Overview
When it comes to authentic Central Montana recreation, few destinations offer the blend of mountain views, open water, and quiet, primitive camping that you find at Ackley Lake State Park. The park’s primary overnight area, commonly referred to as Ackley Lake West Campground, is a prized regional asset. Nestled on the open plains of Judith Basin County, this campground provides a welcome oasis for families, anglers, and water sports enthusiasts looking to enjoy the expansive Big Sky and the cooling waters of the 160-acre reservoir.
Unlike many commercial parks, Ackley Lake West maintains a rustic, first-come, first-served atmosphere, meaning it’s highly popular and highly competitive, especially during the summer months. The campground is managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) and embodies the spirit of accessible state park recreation—free for Montana residents with a state parks pass, offering great value for those seeking a primitive experience. Recent visitor reviews confirm its appeal, highlighting its suitability for family fun, including water skiing, tubing, and jet skiing, a major draw given the limited availability of small lakes in Central Montana that allow motorized watercraft. With the picturesque Little Belt and Snowy Mountains visible on the horizon, the park is a true gem, offering a stunning backdrop to all your aquatic and terrestrial adventures. The park’s designation and minimal amenities ensure the focus remains squarely on the unparalleled natural setting and the recreational opportunities on the lake itself.
Location and Accessibility
Ackley Lake West Campground is located within Ackley Lake State Park near the small, historic community of Hobson, MT 59452, placing it conveniently between the larger hubs of Lewistown and Great Falls. The official address is 989 Ackley Lake Rd, Hobson, MT 59452.
To reach the campground, travelers typically drive 17 miles west of Lewistown on US Highway 87 to Hobson, then proceed approximately 5 miles south on Secondary 400, followed by a final 2-mile stretch southwest on a county road that leads directly to the park entrance. While the final roads are county maintained and generally well-graded, they can be unpaved and subject to seasonal conditions. The relatively easy access makes it a popular destination, especially for weekend trips. Visitors should be prepared for potential wind on the open plains, a common feature of this region. Since the entire campground is situated close to the water, accessibility is excellent for those launching boats, but as the user reviews suggest, securing one of the coveted spots requires arriving early—often by Thursday or early Friday—to ensure a place for the weekend.
Services Offered
Ackley Lake West Campground is explicitly defined by FWP as a primitive, rustic camping area. The services provided are foundational and designed to support the enjoyment of the park while maintaining a low-impact environment. Campers must be fully self-sufficient regarding water and waste management.
- Campsites: The park offers approximately 26 first-come, first-served campsites. These sites can generally accommodate both tents and RVs/trailers, though no hookups are available.
 - Camp Furnishings: Each site is furnished with an established metal fire ring/grill and a picnic table. A major service highlight is that many of the tables are covered by picnic shelters, which provide essential protection from the intense Montana sun and the occasional high prairie winds.
 - Restrooms: Clean, non-flush vault toilets (two facilities) are strategically located throughout the camping area for public use.
 - Boating Facilities: Two dedicated boat ramps and a seasonal dock provide easy launch and retrieval for a variety of watercraft, from canoes to motorized boats.
 - Water: No potable water is available at the campground. Campers must bring in their entire supply of drinking and cooking water for the duration of their stay.
 - Utilities: There are no electrical hookups or dump stations for RVs.
 - Waste Policy: The park operates on a strict “Pack It In, Pack It Out” policy. There are no garbage services, and all trash must be carried out by the campers.
 - Fees: Camping is free for Montana residents (with a state parks pass) and typically $24 per night for non-residents. Payment is made at a self-serve kiosk.

Features / Highlights
Ackley Lake West Campground’s reputation rests entirely on its exceptional recreational environment, providing an essential hub for Central Montana fun.
- All-Water Sports Lake: Unlike many smaller lakes in the region, Ackley Lake permits full motor boating, water skiing, tubing, and jet skiing. This freedom for high-energy water sports is a massive draw, as confirmed by visitor reviews, making it a go-to spot for family aquatic fun.
 - Excellent Trout Fishing: The lake is managed and stocked annually by FWP primarily with Rainbow Trout, and also occasionally with Tiger Muskie. It provides reliable angling for 10- to 15-inch fish throughout the year. Ice fishing is also a major winter feature on the lake.
 - Spectacular Mountain Backdrop: The campground offers unobstructed, sweeping panoramic views of the distant Little Belt and Snowy Mountain Ranges, providing a dramatic, classic Montana setting on the open prairie landscape.
 - Campsites Right on the Water: The entire campground is situated right along the lake shore, ensuring that virtually every one of the 26 available sites offers immediate, convenient access to the water’s edge for swimming, launching kayaks, or fishing.
 - Charlie Russell’s Country: The landscape surrounding the lake is part of the rich agricultural and prairie land that famously captured the attention and heart of legendary Western artist C.M. Russell a century ago, lending the area a deep historical and cultural resonance.

What is Worth Choosing
For any Montanan, choosing Ackley Lake West Campground is a smart decision for several key reasons, primarily centered around its outstanding recreational utility and its incredible value.
Foremost, the lake is a rare Central Montana jewel that permits full-throttle water sports. For families who own a ski boat or jet skis, Ackley Lake provides a convenient and often less crowded alternative to larger, more distant reservoirs. The customer review highlighting the enjoyment of skiing and tubing underscores the park's key identity as a fun-focused, family-friendly lake destination. This flexibility on the water is a primary reason to choose Ackley Lake for a summer weekend.
Second is the exceptional value, particularly for residents. The fact that camping is free for Montana residents with a State Parks Pass makes it one of the most cost-effective and beautiful places to spend a holiday weekend in the entire region. This affordability allows families to spend their money on activities and gear rather than high nightly fees.
Finally, despite its primitive nature (no running water or electricity), the campground offers essential comfort features like the sheltered picnic tables and the convenience of being able to literally set up camp right on the edge of a stocked trout lake. This combination of affordability, fun water recreation, and a stunning mountain backdrop makes Ackley Lake West Campground a highly competitive—and highly rewarding—choice for a genuine Big Sky Country adventure. It is worth the early Friday drive to secure your spot.

Customer Reviews
Very enjoyable, family, friendly, not a large lake but enough for a boat and skiing and tubing and jet skiing. Can’t wait to come back.
I love this camp ground! But if you want a Apr for the weekend you better get there early Friday or Thursday.
Great spot for tent camping! Pit toilets, clean area & very quiet! A tad expensive for tent camping ($24/night out of state campers with no state park pass), beautiful views of the sunsets, pretty lake - overall would recommend for camping! Downside to the spot is there are no showers & no running water, shops in Hobson close early so had to venture a bit further for water. Great site!!
Really nice camp sites. Coyotes, sea gulls, Canada geese, ducks and lots of fish.
Who writes theses park information pages? Can't figure out online if they offer RV camping. Terrible website.
