Adventure Bound Campground & Hostel Introduce

🏕️ **Introduction / Overview: Your Sound-Side Base for Outer Banks Exploration**

For North Carolina residents who cherish the classic tent camping experience—the simplicity of sleeping under canvas combined with the thrill of coastal access—**Adventure Bound Campground & Hostel** in Kitty Hawk offers a unique and authentic option. Strategically located on the sound side of the Outer Banks, this spot caters specifically to **tent campers** and budget-conscious travelers, differentiating itself from the large RV parks that dominate the area. The campground is a seasonal operation, typically open from early spring through October, making it a perfect base for summer and shoulder-season OBX trips.

The core ethos of Adventure Bound is built on simplicity, friendliness, and convenience. While the grounds are described as *“very small,”* limiting the seclusion of the sites, the community spirit is strong, with one customer praising it as a *“wonderful, cozy campground with a family feel to it.”* The owners and operators are frequently cited for their hospitality: *“The owners/operators were very friendly and more than helpful.”* This personal, warm approach sets Adventure Bound apart, focusing on delivering clean, essential amenities and a welcoming atmosphere for those who prefer tent camping near the famed North Carolina beaches and historical sites. 📍 **Location and Accessibility: Near the Action, Yet Off the Bypass**

Adventure Bound Campground is conveniently located at **1004 W Kitty Hawk Rd, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949, USA**. This address places the facility approximately 1.5 miles west of US-158 (the Bypass) at Milepost 4.5. This positioning is a significant benefit for North Carolina explorers: you are minutes away from the ocean beaches, dining, and shopping, yet far enough west to avoid the constant traffic noise of the main coastal thoroughfare.

Accessibility is straightforward, involving a simple turn off the Bypass onto Kitty Hawk Road. This location is particularly valuable for accessing the sound side of the Outer Banks, with a **public boat ramp located just around the corner**. This proximity makes it a prime location for launching kayaks, paddleboards, and small boats to explore the quiet waters of the Currituck Sound—a major draw for non-motorized water enthusiasts. Furthermore, Adventure Bound is highly central to major OBX attractions; the Wright Brothers National Memorial is just four miles away, and the beach access points of Kill Devil Hills are easily reached. While one review noted it’s *“Located near a neighborhood with lots of industrial trucks nearby on the road,”* its overall accessibility to key attractions makes the location a strategic choice for active vacationers.

âś… **What is Worth Choosing Adventure Bound Campground? The Authentic Tent Experience**

For North Carolina tent campers, choosing **Adventure Bound Campground** is a decision to prioritize **affordability, friendly service, and unparalleled access** to the northern Outer Banks. It is worth choosing for several clear reasons that distinguish it from the larger, more expensive RV resorts.

**Firstly, it’s a dedicated tent-only site.** This ensures a true camping atmosphere, eliminating the noise and infrastructure demands of large RVs. While one review noted the proximity of sites and neighborhood noise, another found the location *“quiet”* and the *“other campers were respectful and quiet,”* suggesting the experience largely depends on the specific time and the collective respect of the community—a risk inherent to all small campgrounds that is offset by the generally *“wonderful, cozy”* family feel.

**Secondly, the on-site value is excellent.** The combination of clean, hot showers, affordable laundry, and the free availability of boogie boards and crabbing nets significantly enhances the vacation budget, delivering high value for a moderate price.

**Thirdly, the location provides unique sound access.** Being just *“around the corner”* from a public boat ramp is a massive selling point for water enthusiasts, allowing effortless launching of kayaks and small boats into the calm waters of the sound, which provides a welcome contrast to the ocean surf.

Ultimately, you choose Adventure Bound for its core commitment to a back-to-basics, yet amenity-supported, coastal tent camping experience, backed by highly-praised, friendly staff, making it a reliable and affordable base for exploring the North Carolina coast.

Review is based on tent camping experience. (Not Hostel) Pros: Very friendly staff. Suitable bathrooms. Hot showers. Moderately priced. Plenty of picnic tables and grills. Cons: Very small grounds. Extremely close to other tents and campers, even if the area is not filled up all the way. Other campers can be heard throughout the night, even talking at a normal level. Located near a neighborhood with lots of industrial trucks nearby on the road. A neighbor's driveway splits the camp site. No privacy. You are better off to camp in your backyard.

Wonderful, cozy campground with a family feel to it. Last weekend my wife, daughter, and I camped out here, we had a blast. For one the location is quiet, with nice flat ground and plenty of shady areas. The bath house and outdoor showers were clean and more than adequate, washers and dryers are also available for one dollar a load. The other campers were respectful and quiet. The owners/operators were very friendly and more than helpful. Needless to say, we will be returning.

The staff are very friendly, and the grounds are open, allowing you to pitch a tent anywhere. The campground is only a few minutes from the beach, which is nice. My biggest complaint, and the reason I rated this only three stars, is the bath house. The bath house is absolutely disgusting and appears as if it hasn't been cleaned in months. The floors are nasty and a really bad smell pervades the area. If they cleaned the bathrooms regularly then this would be a five star campground.

Stay away. No good campsites, poorly run, poorly maintained. The small sites in the forest are next to a stagnate swamp and have roots everywhere. Your next best option is an open field by the road. There may have been two good sites that appeared to be taken up by "permanent residents". The management does not enforce the "after hours quite time". Plan on being next to loud campers who bang on the tables and talk about moonshine and what not until 3am. The communal bath house was infested. The beach has better showers. A local park had better picnic tables/grills/playground. Save your money and sleep in your car (if you read this post and STILL decide to go here, I guarantee at 2am you are going to be thinking about this post as you lie in your tent awake and annoyed). The people who work there are nice.

Stayed here overnight while attending a wedding in the area. Rustic, but otherwise clean with a very friendly and helpful host staff. This was our first hostel experience and one that we look forward to repeating. Especially in the spring and fall, cause if I know anything about Nags Head I bet the bugs can pick you up and carry you away in the dead of summer. Thanks to the staff, it was enjoyable!
