đşď¸ Location and Accessibility: Near the Bighorn River Headwaters
Afterbay South Campground is located in a highly strategic area of Southeast Montana, just north of the Yellowtail Dam and the Bighorn Canyon itself, near the small community of Fort Smith. This location is paramount for those focused on fishing, as the Afterbayâthe reservoir immediately downstream of the damâis the starting point for some of the most celebrated fly-fishing in the United States on the Bighorn River.
The campground is situated on the south shore of the Afterbay Lake, offering both water access and a scenic outlook. Access is straightforward, located a short distance from the NPS Headquarters building off Route 313. The nearest mailing address is:
Fort Smith, MT 59035, USA
This deep-Montana location, while remote, is precisely what makes it ideal for true outdoors enthusiasts. It places you in the heart of the Crow Reservation and within the boundaries of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. While cell phone reception can be spotty, this is part of the appeal for those seeking a genuine escape. The physical proximity to the fishing action on the Bighorn River is the undeniable highlight of this location, making it the preferred choice for anglers.
đ ď¸ Services Offered: Essentials for an Extended Stay
The campground focuses on providing the essential, high-utility services needed for both short-term visits and longer, sustained fishing trips. While it is a natural, rustic setting, the key services ensure comfort and convenience.
- Utility Hookups: Afterbay South offers designated full utility sites that include both electric and water hookups, a vital amenity for modern RV travelers. (Note: These sites are typically priced higher than non-utility sites.)
 - Non-Utility Sites: Additional sites are available for tent camping or smaller RVs without utility connections, catering to budget-conscious and more primitive camping styles.
 - Restroom Facilities: The campground provides composting vault toilets (also referred to as pit toilets) which are maintained for cleanliness. There are no shower facilities available on-site.
 - Water Access: Potable drinking water is available seasonally, though some RV sites have individual water spigots.
 - Waste Management: A trailer dump station is available across the road near the NPS Headquarters building for RV guests, along with a large dumpster for general trash disposal.
 - Safety Features: Critical for this area, the campground provides metal locked boxes (food storage lockers) at the sites to securely store food and protect against wildlife, particularly bears, ensuring safety for all campers.
 - Accessibility: The campground includes sites that are handicapped accessible, including designated accessible campsites (such as sites 6, 7, and 19), and accessible pit toilets.

⨠Features / Highlights: Proximity to World-Class Fishing and Nature
The features of Afterbay South are centered around its incredible location and the unique recreational opportunities it provides in Montana's wilderness.
- Unmatched Fishing Access: This is the primary highlight. Afterbay South is the closest drive-in campground to the legendary Bighorn River, which is known internationally for its abundant trout population and excellent drift-boat fishing opportunities.
 - Bear Country Security: The provision of food storage lockers demonstrates a commitment to camper safety and responsible wildlife management in a bear-prone region, offering peace of mind to guests.
 - Scenic Camping: Campers are treated to beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, including the Afterbay lake and the rugged Montana terrain. The quiet environment fosters a genuinely relaxing stay, perfect for de-stressing.
 - Site Amenities: Each campsite is equipped with essential outdoor furniture, including a fire ring and a picnic table, allowing you to enjoy your meals and evenings outside under the expansive Montana sky.
 - Open Year-Round: Unlike many seasonal mountain campgrounds, Afterbay South is generally open all year, allowing dedicated anglers and nature lovers to experience the Bighorn area even during the colder months.

â What is Worth Choosing: The Ultimate Fishing Base Camp
For a resident of Montana, or any traveler seeking an authentic outdoor experience centered on aquatic recreation, Afterbay South Campground is worth choosing for three primary reasons:
- Unbeatable Location for Anglers: If your trip is dedicated to fishing the Bighorn River, you will not find a more convenient drive-in location. The quick access to the river's put-in spots and local fishing shops drastically minimizes travel time and maximizes time spent on the water.
 - RV Utility in a Primitive Setting: The availability of electric and water hookups at the full utility sites is a significant draw. It allows RV travelers to enjoy the wilderness with the comfort of essential power and potable water, which is a rare and valued feature in this type of remote, government-managed land.
 - Peace and Security: The consistently reported quiet environment ensures a restful stay, while the mandatory presence of food storage lockers addresses the real and present concern of wildlife, demonstrating responsible management and providing a safer experience for all campers and their vehicles. Despite an occasional minor maintenance issue like a leaky spigot, the overall beautiful, clean, and secure atmosphere makes it an excellent value for a true Montana escape.

Customer Reviews
Good Campground and location. Water and electricity hook ups. You're just a quick drive away from fishing shops and put in for the Big Horn River. Only problem we had is the water shut off leaked very bad. Had to turn it off when we didn't need it. Otherwise it's a nice spot with beautiful views.
Beautiful spot to camp! We have an rv, and they offer electric hookups here. There are bathrooms as well if you need that. No showers, just toilets. They have a large dumpster, so you can throw your trash away, and they also have metal locked boxes to store your food so bears don't rummage through your area. It's very quiet here and you can definitely relax and enjoy the area. The flowers are so beautiful and the birds are too. We fished but didn't catch anything. We were told the lake hadn't been restocked yet, so there wasn't much to fish. Beautiful spot to stay at. Not far from other spots that people like to fish and explore as well. As of this year, they are charging people to stay there as well. I guess it was free for a long time, but not anymore.
We love it here. The only thing I would say is when it's about 11 pm and after quiet time the guides and tourists fishermen show up very loud for a hour or two. Then they take off again around 4AM again very loudly making coffee and joking. I wondered if it was to avoid the pretty high fees to camp, that they came so late and left so early? I'm not sure but very rude, we left this last time packed up and ready to go by 6AM because I was so frustrated with the little sleep. Not the camp grounds fault but frustrating when you pay 60 dollars for 2 nights.
Nice campground and so close to Yellowtail with great boat access. It's fun and unnerving to be close to water with my little kids, but they LOVED IT. Also, saw a bear near the campground. Again, we love the nature of camping, but it can keep a parent on their toes. Awesome ppl camp there and were watchful too.
No privacy, no shade, no grass, but if you want to visit the area on the Montana side and stay in a public campground, there aren't many options. The fishing is good, too. Be sure to take the drive to Ok-a-Beh Marina. The scenery is stunning and Yellowtail Lake is beautiful. If you have a boat, launch it there and take it down through the canyon. Wow!
