Family Camping Activities for All Ages: Games, Hiking, and Campfire Fun
Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
Welcome to Agate Creek, a backcountry campground nestled within the breathtaking expanse of Yellowstone National Park. As a part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, Agate Creek offers a unique and rugged camping experience for those seeking adventure and solitude.
Located at Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190, Agate Creek is not your typical drive-up campsite. It requires a challenging hike, demanding preparedness and a spirit of adventure. The terrain features steep inclines at the beginning and end of the trail, with relatively flat stretches in between. Be ready for potential encounters with wildlife, including coyotes, foxes, and even wolves. Bison herds may also block trails, requiring detours. The hike out is particularly strenuous, especially in wet conditions, where muddy trails can become treacherous.
The campsite itself is situated approximately 100 feet above the Yellowstone River, providing stunning panoramic views. The river offers opportunities for fishing, swimming, and collecting fresh water. The headwaters of Agate Creek originate from the Petrified Forest on Specimen Ridge, and campers may find samples of petrified wood near the campsite.

Hiking
Good for kids
Great campsite. Hike was pretty chill steep at beginning and end but otherwise flat. Lots of wildlife. Saw coyote chasing fox on way back too. Bear pole was nice. Walk down to river was tedious but with being up high we had an amazing view from the campsite. Fishing was sweet. River too wide and strong to cross safely. Great spot.
Be prepared. The hike out is very difficult, especially if it's raining almost impossible to climb the muddy trail. If solo beware of many nocturnal animals, I had a wolf visit me while at the campfire at dusk. He walked away after a few minutes of observing each other. During the night, I heard many others, cats, coyotes, and others moving about. Never saw a bear on this trail. Hiking in, I had to take a mile detour around a 500+ bison herd that covered the trail about a mile from the drop down to the yellowstone River. It is a very challenging hike and campsite. The campsite is about 100 feet above the river where you can fish, swim, and collect fresh water. The head waters of Agate Creek come from the Petrified forest east on specimen ridge. I saw numerous samples of petrified trees and left a few at the campsite. If you camp at this site, share your experiences. JB
