Agua Caliente Campground Introduce
California, a state celebrated for its incredible diversity, boasts everything from snowy mountain peaks to sun-drenched coastlines. Yet, for many local Californians, the allure of the desert, particularly during the cooler months, offers a truly unique and restorative escape. Tucked away within the vast and stunning Anza-Borrego Desert State Park lies Agua Caliente Campground, a true oasis that combines the rugged beauty of the desert with the luxurious comfort of natural hot springs. This isn't just a place to pitch a tent; it's a destination where you can unwind in mineral-rich waters under a vast desert sky, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking relaxation and adventure.
Agua Caliente Campground stands out among California's camping options due to its exceptional geothermal features. The campground is fed by natural hot springs, providing three distinct pools filled with geo-thermally heated water. This makes it an incredibly appealing destination, especially during the crisp desert mornings and cool evenings of the fall, winter, and spring seasons. While the Anza-Borrego Desert can be extreme in its temperatures during the summer (hence the campground's seasonal closure), the rest of the year offers a perfect climate for exploring the desert's unique landscapes and unwinding in the soothing waters.
Visitors consistently praise Agua Caliente for its clean facilities, including flush toilets and hot showers – amenities that add a significant level of comfort to a desert camping experience. The campground caters to a variety of preferences, offering everything from full hook-up sites for RVs to primitive tent sites for those who prefer a more traditional approach, and even cabins for a touch of added convenience. Beyond the pools, the surrounding desert landscape invites exploration, with several hiking trails starting directly from the campground.
This article will provide a comprehensive overview of Agua Caliente Campground, detailing its precise location and accessibility, the range of services and facilities it offers, its standout features and highlights, and crucial contact information. We'll also delve into why this unique desert oasis is a particularly suitable and appealing destination for local Californians looking for their next refreshing getaway.
Agua Caliente Campground is nestled within the expansive Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Southern California. Its precise address is Agua Caliente Campground, Julian, CA 92036, USA. While the mailing address includes "Julian," the campground is located a significant drive east of the town of Julian, deeper within the desert landscape.
For Californians, accessing Agua Caliente Campground typically involves a scenic drive into the Anza-Borrego Desert. From major population centers like San Diego, the drive is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, taking you east through mountain passes and then descending into the desert floor. From Los Angeles and Orange County, the drive is longer, generally around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic, and often involves routes through Borrego Springs or along State Route 78.
The campground is situated along County Road S-2, also known as Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849, which is a paved road. This makes the campground highly accessible for all vehicle types, including large RVs. Despite its desert location, you won't typically encounter challenging dirt roads to reach the main campground area, which is a significant advantage for many campers.
While the address indicates Julian, it's important to recognize that the campground's immediate surroundings are pure desert, offering a sense of seclusion and connection to nature. The drive itself is part of the experience, transitioning from urban or mountain environments to the unique, arid beauty of the Anza-Borrego Desert. The clear accessibility makes Agua Caliente a convenient and appealing destination for a weekend trip or a longer stay for Californians seeking a desert escape.

Site #102. Desert campground in Anza Borrego State Park with clean flush toilets and hot showers. There are 3 pools filled with geo-thermally heated water from the hot springs. The campground is a mix of full hook-up sites, primitive tent sites and cabins. Campground is closed during the summer months due to the extreme desert temperatures. The several hiking trails that start in the campground and travel through the desert landscape are best explored in the morning or at dusk to avoid the desert heat.
Great place to camp. We've camped here for long weekends twice. There are 3 pools from the natural spring: children pool 2.5 feet deep, larger pool for everyone 3.5-5.0 feet deep, indoor heated pool for 14 year olds & older.
Love to go camping there. Beautiful hike. Do not forget to put your hiking shoes.
As far as campgrounds go, I'd say this has been the best in the San Diego area that I visited. Having the mineral water pools, fed from natural hot springs, was a great amenity that myself and my 9yo enjoyed. They were very refreshing on a warm desert day. It's also very close to the Palm Springs historical market and the Arroyo Tapiado Mud Caves. No cell service can be had at the campground but that didn't matter as we were there to get away from the busyness of the city.
Our favorite place to hike and camp. The place is well maintained. You can put up a tent, rent a cabin or bring your RV. We chose the partial hook up so we have the water and electricity in our campsite for $64. The place is quiet and the people we met were friendly, respectful and considerate. They follow the rules. The bathrooms are clean, no lines, you need quarters for showers $1.50 per 15 minutes. There are family bathrooms where you have the shower and toilet and baby diaper changing station this helps if you have little ones with you. You can bring your dogs and they have designated areas to walk the dogs. There are lots of coyotes so keep them indoors if you are going to the pool. No dogs allowed in the pool areas or the coyotes will snatch your fur babies. No cell or wifi connection so download all your songs or movies prior to checking in. There is a small general store 2 miles down the road and they just have the basic camping needs. There is a cell reception in that area too. There are 2 pools outside for all ages and 1 indoors for 14+. Pools are clean and maintained. It looks full of people all the time but people only stay in 15+20 at a time because it is very warm. I feel relaxed and ready for a nap after 15 mins. There are jets all around the pool to massage your back. The Rangers are available nearby and all were very friendly and helpful. Check the weather and especially if it's windy you may need to bring weights for your tent or canopy and extra ropes. The wind can go up to 35-65 mph on some days. The place is close from Memorial Day to Labor Day and they get booked right away so plan ahead.
