It is about 3 miles of exhausting ascent followed by a mile of flat / decline to get to the camp. The camp itself was very serene, close to the creek with ample pools to cool off in and very large trees. Falling asleep was very easy with the sound of the creek droning nearby. As for animal life, we were attacked by yellow jackets about halfway up the trail and saw fresh signs of deer. There were a few owl hoots right at sunset.
