nice little campground on the river. first come first serve. $18/ night cash or check only. highway traffic just above, but quiets down after dark.
I stopped in the picnic area and ate a lite lunch. It was raining and fairly muddy. I let my dogs run around a little bit and they seemed to enjoy the site. I had some time to kill so I wandered down to the river which is flowing fast this spring. I was a good lunch break. This is a fee campground managed by a third-party company, not the NFS.
Small campground, around 10 spaces, split between trailer and tent sites. The only reason you intentionally go to this campground is easy access for fly fishing. If you're just looking for a place to camp for the night, consider this a campground of last resort. Has vault toilet, hence a '2' star. Literally the least desirable campground I've ever stayed at.
We stayed one night at this campground and enjoyed our stay. It did rain a lot for about an hour around 5pm but it was beautiful, calming & our tent held up! We pitched our tent to the front of the parking spot on campsite #10. It was a bit bumpy and uneven as we don’t have foam pads or an air mattress but I slept fine. Though, my partner did mention that he felt like he was at a slope, unfortunately. There was no “beach” but still some room to put a few chairs and be by the river. Luckily we didn’t have any trouble with mosquitoes but I did bring spray as well as lavender oil just in case. The water levels are very low sadly but my partner still tried his hand at fishing. The picnic table is in the sun, so I definitely recommend bringing some shade coverage. I chose this spot as a back up but one of the main reasons I chose this side of CO is bc there are a lot of trees/foliage that offer shade for the hot summer days! We put our chairs under a big ponderosa 🌲. The fire pit/ grill is really impressive but is awfully close to some bushes so keep that in mind. They do have toilets but they don’t seem to be cleaned often enough. The smell was too unbearable for me so we drove to Gunnison so I could use their toilet 🤣😅. Oh well 🤷🏽♀️ Overall was a successful trip as it was a first come, first serve basis! It was chilly and windy and did lightly rain, again, at night but our cheap 30•f sleeping bags were enough (course I had a long sleeve, hoodie, sweats and thick socks as well 🙂).
Very nice little campground, we were spot # 8 and the bathrooms were convenient and didn’t have a gnarly smell like some bathrooms do, it was $12 a night, close to the river , there were about 5 “tent” campgrounds- although we camped in the back of the truck, and then there where the trailer sites that where off a ways to the right side as you enter the campground. Not sure how many sites where there or how big of a trailer those sites hold. Overall nice experience.
