Area One Campground Introduce
🏕️ Embrace the Silence: Discovering the Rustic Appeal of Area One Campground
For Nebraska residents who value true **solitude and an undeveloped outdoor experience**, **Area One Campground** near Hallam is a cherished, albeit rustic, destination. This campground is situated on the shores of **Olive Creek Lake**, a smaller, quieter State Recreation Area (SRA) located southwest of Lincoln. Unlike the larger, more developed Salt Valley Lakes that feature modern RV hookups and extensive amenities, Area One Campground is a **primitive, tent-only site** that rewards self-sufficient campers with tranquility and unspoiled nature.
This location is for those who consciously choose to "rough it" and disconnect. Customer feedback consistently emphasizes the camp's quiet nature, noting that it's a place to "camp and relax." However, prospective campers should be fully aware that Area One is a **no-amenities zone**, a key factor that preserves its peaceful, secluded atmosphere. The draw here is the escape: fishing, kayaking on the lake (where only electric motors are allowed, ensuring quiet waters), and excellent stargazing away from the city lights. This truly is a spot for the prepared Nebraska camper who wants a simple tent-and-fire-pit experience.
🗺️ Location and Accessibility
Area One Campground is located within the **Olive Creek Lake State Recreation Area (SRA)**, a state-managed property known for its flat terrain, grasslands, and relatively small, peaceful lake. The campground's address places it in a rural setting, southwest of Lincoln, making it a convenient but remote-feeling escape for residents of Southeast Nebraska.
The site's general location is:
Hallam, NE 68368, USA
The beauty of this location is its accessibility from major Nebraska population centers while still maintaining a secluded feel. It is approximately a **30-minute drive southwest of Lincoln**, making it ideal for a quick weekend getaway. Access to the area is typically via well-marked paved and gravel county roads. However, the experience upon arrival is decidedly rustic. Visitors should be prepared for a **primitive setting** that requires driving in and setting up without the paved pads or extensive lighting found in high-use state parks. It is essential to note the reports of the **lake water level being low** at times, which can impact boating and the aesthetic of lakeside camping, a condition typical of some smaller Nebraska SRAs during dry periods.
🛠️ Services Offered
As a designated **primitive campground**, the services at Area One are intentionally minimal. This is a deliberate choice by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to maintain the quiet, undeveloped nature of the Olive Creek SRA. Campers must adhere strictly to the principle of self-sufficiency, bringing everything they need, especially water and supplies.
The minimal services and rustic facilities provided include:
Tent-Only Camping: The area is dedicated to traditional tent camping, offering grassy or natural ground sites rather than paved pads.
Vault Toilets/Outhouses: Rustic, non-flush toilet facilities are available. User reviews describe these "outhouses" as simple and prone to issues like insects (wasps and flies) during the warmer months, emphasizing the need for personal preparation.
Fire Rings/Grills: Simple metal rings or grills are generally provided at sites for campfires and cooking.
Picnic Tables: Rustic picnic tables are typically found at each designated site.
No Potable Water: Campers must **bring all their own drinking and cooking water**, as there is no running water or spigots available.
No Electricity/Dump Station: There are no electrical hookups or modern sewer/dump stations for RVs, reinforcing the primitive nature of the site.
🌟 Features and Highlights
The features that distinguish Area One Campground are defined by its quiet wilderness setting and its focus on low-impact recreation, making it an ideal choice for a certain type of Nebraska outdoor enthusiast.
Key highlights that draw campers to this secluded spot include:
Exceptional Peace and Quiet: The most consistent praise the campground receives is for its **tranquil atmosphere**. The lack of amenities and large crowds ensures a genuinely restful and peaceful camping experience.
Olive Creek Lake Access: The campground offers easy access to the lake, which is a perfect environment for **kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boating**, as motorboat use is restricted (only electric motors allowed).
Fantastic Stargazing: Located far enough from the bright lights of Lincoln, the primitive setting offers some of the best opportunities in the region for **clear, unpolluted night sky viewing**.
Fishing Opportunities: Olive Creek Lake is a popular spot for local anglers, offering fishing opportunities from the shore or small watercraft.
Uncrowded Experience: Due to the primitive nature and lack of RV hookups, the campground generally avoids the "camper city" congestion found at larger, more developed State Recreation Areas.

✨ What is Worth Choosing Area One Campground
For Nebraska campers who define success by the **level of escape and rustic immersion**, Area One Campground at Olive Creek Lake is an ideal choice. You are choosing a place specifically for what it *lacks*: **noise, crowds, light pollution, and modern distractions**. This campground is one of the region’s best choices for a true, no-frills tent camping experience near water, offering a serene atmosphere for reflection, fishing, and quiet contemplation.
While the primitive facilities (like the outhouses) and the need to pack in all supplies are challenges, they are the very factors that deter heavy traffic and preserve the peaceful nature. Customer Reviews
As of March 2025, the water is very low. Camping is quiet. No amenities and not near any stores, so bring what you need. Out houses are simply horrendous and in the summer, wasps and flies will run you out.
Great spot other than being a mosquito sanctuary
It was great
