I'm writing this review a few years after visiting this campground. I recall this location being particularly pretty and secluded from other campgrounds I visit. Road out to Aspen Campground is mostly dirt road after you leave US285 and feels like to goes forever. The road goes through open prairie. The campground is small, about a dozen spots and is based on a one way loop. When we were there, a ranger warned us about a bear trap a few camping spots away to prevent the children from playing near the trap. The campground was very quiet and actually don't recall any others stay there on an end of July weekend. Camping spots are rough, no tent pads. There is a picnic table and fire pit/ring with grill. There was plenty of space for two tents for my party. The area is pretty, well wooded and very green. Jefferson Creek runs nearby the campground. Down the road is Jefferson lake with a boat ramp. The lake is worth the short drive or hike to visit. I rated 4 stars due to the campground road condition. The road had deep ruts and not suitable for a low clearance car. Although the road to the campground was not an issue, you might have trouble in the campground. I drove my mini-van no problem, but had to work around the deep ruts and soft wet ground to avoid getting stuck. Might be improved since I was last there.

I will give this place 5 stars all the way! It was amazing here. My wife, son, and myself stayed at spot 6 in the aspen campground for 2 nights and it was beautiful. We ended up staying for 2 more nights at spot 8. This is a very clean campsite and the bathrooms were spotless. It was nice to see the camp host’s Cleaning every site and bathroom daily.
