The allure of Michigan's vast natural landscapes is undeniable, and campgrounds like Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground are precisely why so many of us cherish our outdoor heritage. This isn't your average RV park with paved sites and full hookups. Instead, it’s a place where the sounds of the river, the rustling of leaves, and the crackle of a campfire define your stay. It’s a destination that encourages you to embrace simplicity and the beauty of the wild. From paddling down the historic Au Sable River to spotting local wildlife, every moment here is an invitation to immerse yourself in the natural world that makes our state so special. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or looking to try a more rugged experience, understanding what Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground offers will help you plan your perfect Michigan getaway.
Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground is located in Grayling, Michigan, 49738, USA. This puts it squarely in the heart of Northern Michigan, a region renowned for its pristine forests, winding rivers, and abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. For locals across the Lower Peninsula and even those in the Upper Peninsula, Grayling is a relatively accessible destination, offering a genuine escape without an overly arduous journey.
However, it's crucial for prospective visitors to understand the nature of its accessibility. As some visitors have noted, direct road access to the campground can be challenging. There have been instances where what appears on DNR maps as an access road is gated off and overgrown, leading to a more challenging approach. This indicates that the campground is likely designed for walk-in access, particularly for those with camping gear and supplies. This means visitors should be prepared to park their vehicles and transport their equipment a certain distance to reach the camping areas by the river. This walk-in aspect contributes significantly to the rustic charm and secluded feel of the campground, ensuring a quieter and more immersed experience in nature. While it might require a bit more effort in planning and packing, this characteristic helps preserve the natural integrity of the site and deters casual visitors, ensuring a more dedicated outdoor community.
Therefore, when planning your trip, factor in the potential for a walk to your campsite. It's advisable to pack light or use gear that is easily portable. This characteristic, while a minor hurdle for some, is a major draw for others seeking a truly off-the-beaten-path camping adventure in Michigan. Being aware of this accessibility detail beforehand will help you prepare adequately and ensure a smooth, enjoyable arrival at this beautiful riverside retreat.
- Out-houses: Basic toilet facilities are available, providing essential conveniences for campers. These are generally rustic in nature, aligning with the overall primitive camping experience.
- Wells for water: Potable water sources are available via wells, allowing campers to replenish their water supplies without needing to carry large quantities. It's always a good practice to bring your own water filter or purification tablets as a backup.
- Dog-friendly environment: This campground openly welcomes dogs, making it an excellent choice for pet owners who want to enjoy the outdoors with their furry companions. Remember to keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them to maintain the natural beauty and respect other campers.
- DNR maintenance checks: The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff periodically checks on the campground, typically on Sundays or every couple of days depending on their schedule. This ensures the upkeep of basic facilities and adherence to regulations, contributing to a safe and pleasant experience for all.
- Absolutely beautiful views: The campground boasts breathtaking views from the docks and landing areas, offering picturesque scenes of the Au Sable River and surrounding natural landscape. These vistas are perfect for photography or simply enjoying the serene environment.
- Opportunities to see wildlife: Visitors frequently report sightings of various wildlife crossing the river or on the trails. This natural abundance adds to the immersive outdoor experience, providing chances to observe Michigan's diverse fauna in their natural habitat.
- Popular fishing spot (catch and release): The Au Sable River is well-known among anglers, and this section is particularly popular for fishing. However, it operates on a catch-and-release basis, promoting sustainable fishing practices and preserving the fish population for future enjoyment.
- Walk-in camping access: While a logistical consideration, the necessity to walk with your camping gear and food down to the river contributes significantly to the campground's secluded and tranquil atmosphere. It filters out casual visitors, creating a more dedicated and respectful camping community.
- Huge, mostly shaded spots: The camping areas are described as spacious and predominantly shaded, offering comfort and privacy. The shade is particularly beneficial during warmer months, providing relief from the sun and contributing to a cooler camping environment.
- Lots of wildlife and nature to enjoy: Beyond specific sightings, the overall environment is rich with natural beauty and biodiversity. This makes it an ideal location for nature observation, bird watching, hiking, and simply enjoying the peace and quiet of the Michigan wilderness.

Tried to access from road which DNR map shows you directions , to discover its gated off and overgrown "road" to camp ground. Ended up at a different StF camp.
Absolutely beautiful! The view off the docks an landing are breath taking, Maybe get lucky enough to see wildlife cross the river, an or the trails. Fishing there is popular but it's catch n release. Can go camping at the river but you have to walk, along with you're camping gear, food, ect. down to the river. Has out-houses, an wells for water. Dog friendly. Huge spot, an mostly shaded. DNR maintenances mostly check on Sundays, unless if they're busy then it's every couple of days or so. Lots of wildlife an nature to enjoy!
Landed here while kayaking this weekend. Be advised: all signage says NO CAMPING; seems like an oxymoron (Canoe Camp...but no camping allowed). Nevertheless, a pleasant place to stop, with water and an outhouse.
Used their shuttle service, very friendly and accommodating to your needs. Highly recommend for some quiet time on the river.
Awesome river access, canoe/tent camping campground. If doing a overnight canoe trip, great place to camp out.
