Avalanche Campground Introduce
Avalanche Campground offers a peaceful and secluded camping experience just outside the gates of Glacier National Park in West Glacier, MT. This charming campground is an ideal destination for travelers who want to connect with nature while enjoying basic amenities and easy access to some of the most stunning trails in the area. Whether you're planning a family trip, a solo adventure, or a getaway with friends, Avalanche Campground provides a comfortable base camp for exploring the beauty of Glacier National Park.
One of the standout features of Avalanche Campground is its quiet and laid-back atmosphere. Unlike some busier campgrounds, this site offers a tranquil setting where visitors can unwind and recharge. The campground is particularly popular among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts due to its proximity to the Avalanche Lake Trail, one of the park's most iconic routes. The convenience of being able to start your hike directly from the campsite without dealing with parking hassles is a major advantage for guests.
Accommodations at Avalanche Campground cater to both tent and RV travelers. The site offers designated camping spots with enough space to set up tents or park vehicles comfortably. For those traveling in larger rigs, there are pull-through sites available. Basic amenities include restrooms with running water and waste disposal stations, making it easy to stay clean and comfortable during your stay. The campground also provides fire pits for roasting marshmallows under the stars, adding a touch of rustic charm to your outdoor experience.
One of the unique aspects of Avalanche Campground is its small size, which contributes to its intimate and community-driven vibe. While the staff has faced some criticism in the past regarding their approach to camper interactions, many guests appreciate the personalized attention they receive. The campground's commitment to wildlife safety and preparedness is evident in its efforts to educate visitors about bear safety and proper food storage, which are essential for a safe and enjoyable stay in bear country.
For those planning an extended stay or multiple trips, Avalanche Campground offers promotional deals and discounts for long-term guests. Additionally, the campground may have special rates for military personnel and their families, making it an attractive option for outdoor enthusiasts with specific needs.
In terms of nearby attractions, Glacier National Park is a treasure trove of natural wonders. From the crystal-clear waters of Avalanche Lake to the towering peaks and lush alpine meadows, there are endless opportunities for hiking, photography, and simply soaking in the beauty of nature. The campground's location also makes it an excellent base for exploring other nearby attractions, such as the Apgar Visitor Center and the Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Customer feedback highlights both the strengths and areas for improvement at Avalanche Campground. Many guests praise its quiet environment and proximity to trails, which they say enhances their overall experience. One visitor noted, "The main upside is that you do not have to fight for parking to go to the avalanche lake trail, you can simply walk from your campsite." This convenience is a significant plus for hikers who want to start their adventure without the hassle of finding a parking spot.
However, there have been some negative reviews regarding the level of service provided by the staff. One guest shared, "Camp service people were absolutely horrible. Intrusive to us and nearby campers and going through campsites searching for 'things that can attract bears' while threatening to call the park rangers if people stay up past 10:00. Would not recommend this campground." These experiences highlight the importance of clear communication and respect between staff and guests, which are essential for maintaining a positive camping environment.
Despite these challenges, Avalanche Campground continues to be a preferred choice for many visitors seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of Glacier National Park's beauty. Its serene location, proximity to hiking trails, and basic yet functional amenities make it an attractive option for nature lovers who are prepared for a rustic camping experience.

Very quiet small campsite with adequate amenities. The main upside is that you do not have to fight for parking to go to the avalanche lake trail, you can simply walk from your campsite.
Camp service people were absolutely horrible. Intrusive to us and nearby campers and going through campsites searching for "things that can attract bears" while threatening to call the park rangers if people stay up past 10:00. Would not recommend this campground.
Great campground. You actually get total darkness at night! Heads up very spartan bathrooms and no showers but a great tent camping location!!
running water toilets, respectful campers following bear and quiet hour protocol, extremely close proximity to the best of Glacier. what more could you ask for?
A beautiful campground in the middle of Glacier National Park. Lots of spacious spots. The camp sites feel secluded and private. There are fun hikes accessible from the campground itself. Also, you can access the shuttle system from the campground. We were easily able to hop on a shuttle up to the top of Logan Pass without having to drive up or park in the parking lot.
Camping spot handicapped easy to restrooms. It’s dark at night so remember flashlight and put your shoes by your cot so you don’t need to walk barefoot in the dark
