Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For us Wisconsinites, the call of the Northwoods is an irresistible one. We crave the serene sounds of nature, the scent of pine, and the thrill of outdoor adventure, especially when it involves our beautiful rivers and forests. While our state offers a myriad of camping experiences, from bustling family resorts to secluded backcountry sites, there’s a special allure to those hidden gems that offer a truly immersive, yet accessible, natural experience. Bagley Rapids Campground, nestled in Mountain, Wisconsin, is precisely one such place. Praised by campers as a "hidden gem" with sites "right on the water" and "rapids that sound so cool at night," it promises a memorable escape into the heart of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
Wisconsin is blessed with an abundance of natural resources, and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest stands as a testament to this, offering vast stretches of wilderness for recreation and relaxation. Within this forest, campgrounds like Bagley Rapids provide a gateway to some of our state's most pristine environments. What makes Bagley Rapids particularly appealing is its direct connection to the North Branch Oconto River, known for its picturesque rapids and excellent fishing opportunities. This makes it an ideal spot for those who want to fall asleep to the soothing sounds of rushing water and wake up ready for a day on the river or exploring the surrounding trails.
Bagley Rapids Campground caters to a specific kind of camper – one who appreciates rustic charm over extensive amenities, and who values peace and natural beauty above all else. Its first-come, first-served policy means that securing a spot requires a bit of spontaneity and good timing, but the reward is a truly authentic Wisconsin camping experience. This article will delve into the specifics of Bagley Rapids Campground, covering its location, the services you can expect, its unique features, and why it stands out as an excellent choice for fellow Wisconsinites seeking a genuine outdoor adventure.
Bagley Rapids Campground is located at Lower Bagley Rapids Rd, Mountain, WI 54149, USA. This places it deep within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, specifically in Oconto County, Wisconsin. The town of Mountain, a small community, is only about 3 miles away, offering convenient access to basic services like restaurants, a convenience store, and gas. Larger towns such as Lakewood and Townsend, which provide more extensive grocery options, supplies, and laundromats, are about 13 miles away.
Accessibility to Bagley Rapids Campground is generally straightforward via well-maintained forest roads. While the exact final approach road might be gravel, as is common in national forests, it's designed to be traversable for most vehicles, including RVs and trailers. Reviewers specifically note that many "parking spurs are long, flat and level, excellent for longer RV's and trailers," with maximum lengths ranging from 35 to 45 feet depending on the site. However, it's crucial to remember that this is a National Forest campground, which implies a more rustic experience than a private RV park. The campground's location by the Oconto River means easy access for fishing and paddling activities directly from many campsites. Given its proximity to local towns, campers can easily restock supplies while still enjoying the secluded feeling of a forest setting. The campground is open seasonally, typically from late May through mid-October, so checking the operational dates before planning a trip is essential for locals.
Bagley Rapids Campground offers a range of basic, rustic services typical of a National Forest campground, designed to provide a comfortable experience while preserving the natural environment.

Stayed in site 19 at the end of June 2025. It's right by the rapids that sound so cool at night. Camp host really nice, site was right by pit toilets and well pump too. There is some poison ivy along the paths and site perimeter, so be careful with that.
Wow. What a hidden gem. We had our site right on the water and we’re able to listen to the rapids all night!!! Sight was clean, and wasn’t to terribly hard to back into. We even had stairs right to the river. So glad we found this place!!
Great NF campground. Clean sites, many of them are riverfront. Sites are definitely better for tent camping. The trail along the river is nice as well.
This campground is wonderful. The sites are spacious, the bathrooms are clean and well-stocked, and the rapids were beautiful. We stayed for a weekend at the beginning of October and less than half the sites were full. I had reliable cell service throughout the campground. We will certainly be back.
Great National Forest camp grounds, big sites but no hook ups. Make sure you are fully equipped with propane and if you require electricity, make sure you have a generator and fuel to run it. Water is on site although you may need to carry it to your site. Quiet time is 10p to 7a. ATVs are not allowed! We love it there, and with our senior citizens pass it's only $7.50 a day (24 hrs)
