Base Camp Adventure Lodge Introduce
Within the diverse and often bustling category of Campgrounds & RV Parks, Base Camp Adventure Lodge stands out as a truly unique and somewhat enigmatic destination near Moab, Utah. Far from a conventional campground, it offers a blend of rustic charm, genuine adventure, and the comforts of various accommodation types, catering to those who truly wish to immerse themselves in the spectacular red rock wilderness. This introduction will detail the environment, services, features, and unique promotional aspects of Base Camp Adventure Lodge, providing a comprehensive overview for local users seeking an unforgettable outdoor experience.
The environment of Base Camp Adventure Lodge is arguably its most defining feature. Tucked away in a remote area near Moab, the lodge is situated in a stunning landscape characterized by immense red rock cliffs, dramatic buttes, and direct access to the Colorado River. It offers panoramic views that are often compared to those found in nearby national parks like Arches and Canyonlands. The property itself is extensive, covering a mile long and half a mile wide, and is largely surrounded by thousands more acres of rugged canyon lands. This remote setting ensures an extraordinary level of solitude and quiet, far from the light and noise pollution of urban areas. The access road to the lodge, which involves traversing Hurrah Pass, is known for being rugged and requiring high-clearance vehicles, with some guests even noting the need for off-road driving skills or a skilled driver. This challenging approach, while a barrier for some, serves to preserve the pristine nature of the environment and enhances the sense of adventure for those who make the journey. Guests can expect to be surrounded by indigenous flora and fauna, with frequent sightings of fox, ringtail, spotted skunk, badger, raccoon, mule deer, and bighorn sheep. The lodge is also home to a nearly 200-pound African Spur tortoise named Kobae, who often interacts with guests. The night skies are particularly phenomenal, offering unpolluted views of the Milky Way, making stargazing a prime activity.
Base Camp Adventure Lodge, while offering a primitive feel in its remote location, provides a surprising array of services that enhance the adventurous stay. The lodge itself has a main house with seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and a full-service communal kitchen, equipped with pots, pans, dishes, and coffee makers, allowing guests to prepare their own meals. There are also outside barbecues and a fire pit available for guest use. Many rooms also feature microwaves and mini-fridges. Beyond the main lodge, accommodations include private rooms, a beautiful two-bedroom condo, and unique Navajo Hogans, which offer a more rustic yet comfortable experience. For those who prefer traditional camping, there is also plenty of space for tent camping. Critically, despite its off-grid location, the lodge offers reliable Wi-Fi (often via Starlink) in the main lodge and some accommodations, allowing guests to stay connected if desired. Given the lack of cell service in the area, the owner provides walkie-talkies for guests to use when venturing out, ensuring a safety net. Laundry facilities are also available. The host, Tom Higginson, is a notable feature in himself, known for his exceptional hospitality, deep knowledge of the area, and willingness to assist guests, even going so far as to help navigate the challenging access road or drive guests to nearby trailheads. Pet-friendly accommodations are available, making it an excellent choice for those traveling with their furry companions.
The features of Base Camp Adventure Lodge are intrinsically linked to the outdoor activities it facilitates, making it a true "base camp" for exploration. Directly from the property, guests have unlimited access to hiking trails, leading to features like the Wind Caves and Chicken Corner. The lodge is a mere five-minute walk from the Colorado River, where guests have complimentary access to kayaks (both singles and doubles), complete with paddles and life jackets provided by the lodge. This direct river access opens up opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and enjoying a secluded beach. A standout feature, for which the lodge has gained significant recognition, is its two 18-hole disc golf courses, which are renowned for their challenging layout and incredible scenery, often being ranked among the world's best. These courses are available to guests at no charge or for a nominal fee for day visitors. For those seeking motorized adventure, side-by-side rentals are available on-site, offering guided tours to remote spots like the Wind Caves and Chicken Corner. The property's geological richness means opportunities to discover dinosaur tracks, fossils, petrified wood, pottery sherds, and ancient petroglyphs. Wildlife viewing is also a daily highlight, especially during evening feedings where various critters gather on the front porch. The unique opportunity to interact with Kobae, the resident tortoise, adds another memorable dimension to the stay. The sheer array of activities, coupled with the profound sense of seclusion, sets Base Camp Adventure Lodge apart from conventional campgrounds.
Promotional information for Base Camp Adventure Lodge often centers on its unique blend of remoteness and unexpected comfort, appealing to a niche audience of self-reliant adventurers. Reviews consistently highlight the "perfect combination of isolation, comfort, and beauty." The lodge is promoted as an escape from the ordinary, where the journey to get there is part of the adventure. While specific promotional "sales" are not typically advertised, the value for the experience is frequently lauded. The option to stay in various accommodation types, from traditional camping to private rooms, hogans, or even a condo, caters to different preferences and budgets. The communal kitchen and outdoor cooking facilities provide an opportunity for guests to save on dining costs, further enhancing the value. The lodge emphasizes safety in its remote setting, requiring guests to inform staff of their plans and providing walkie-talkies for communication. The owner's personal involvement and commitment to guest safety and enjoyment are frequently cited as a major draw. For those seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path Moab experience that offers unparalleled access to outdoor activities, stunning natural beauty, and a strong sense of community with fellow adventurers, Base Camp Adventure Lodge is promoted as the ultimate destination. It's an invitation to "unplug and unwind" while simultaneously engaging in a wide array of thrilling outdoor pursuits, all within a uniquely hospitable and secure environment.

AMAZING disc golf course! The owners were very kind and welcoming! Would highly recommend this place. You definitely need 4x4 high clearance or off road vehicle. If you have anxiety or fear of heights then I strongly suggest taking what you need to not have a panic attack on the drive there and back. But definitely worth it!
If you have a HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLE and a good spare tire (lol) this place is AMAZING. Owner on site ans super friendly. Water on sight. Kayaks and side by sides to rent. Dis golf course, wind caves. And don't get me started on the tortoise or the hot dog hole. Beautiful scenery, friendly folks, very communal. My friend cried 3 times on that road though. Chicken corners and hurrah pass are not for the weak! I will definitely return. My subaru forester did fine on the road, but I did wake up the next day with a flat tire, luckily I had a spare and they have an air compressor on property.
We gave this 5 stars and loved our stay, but you have to know what you're getting into -- the road there is rough, although our Subaru Forester was adequate. You aren't headed to a fancy, luxury hotel -- I think this experience might be a little similar to living in a commune, in a good way. The living room and kitchen are shared spaces, as are the outdoor spaces/decks; you very likely won't want to leave to drive back into Moab for meals, so bring all your food. The bedrooms aren't large, but we were only in ours to sleep, so it was just fine. The vast majority of our time was spent outside -- the surroundings are absolutely magnificent. It was one of the most peaceful, remote places we've stayed other than backpacking trips. Both disc golf courses are great and well-marked. They were just the right amount of challenge and we appreciated the short and long hole options. Tom was a great host - good sense of humor, able to answer all of our questions, and a great steward of the land. Kobae was just an added bonus!
By far the best part of our trip! Tom is awesome, the Female Hogan was great, and renting the Polaris was totally with it!
The most gorgeous disc golf course. I don't think I will ever play another course top this one. Tom is super kind and very interesting.
