📍 Location and Accessibility
Basin Cr Dispersed Campground is situated within the Lewis and Clark National Forest, an area renowned for its rugged beauty and extensive recreational opportunities. The nearest community is Martinsdale, MT 59053, USA. Access to the area typically involves navigating Forest Service roads. It is essential for visitors to understand that this is a dispersed camping area, and the roads leading in, while generally passable, are rustic and unpaved. Local knowledge suggests that the road quality can be challenging, requiring a slow and steady pace, especially for larger vehicles or those towing campers.
For those traveling in larger recreational vehicles, like a three-quarter ton truck with a camper, be advised that the drive in and out will require patience and careful navigation. The journey is part of the experience, transitioning you from paved roads to the raw, natural setting of the Little Belt Mountains. Prospective visitors should ensure their vehicle is prepared for rough, dirt, and potentially muddy conditions, especially during the spring or after heavy rain. Always consult a local forest map or the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for the most current information on road conditions and seasonal closures.

🛠️ Services Offered
As a dispersed camping area, the philosophy is "pack it in, pack it out," meaning facilities are intentionally minimal to maintain the primitive nature of the area. Campers should arrive prepared to be self-sufficient. The primary amenity provided serves basic needs for the camping area.
- A limited number of designated, dispersed campsites
 - A single vault toilet facility (minimal amenity)
 - Picnic tables are available at some sites
 - Fire rings and/or grills are provided at some sites

It is critically important to note the lack of highly developed infrastructure:
- No Potable Water: Campers must bring all necessary drinking and cooking water.
 - No Showers or Dump Stations: This is primitive camping; all waste and refuse must be packed out.
 - No Reservations: Camping is typically offered on a first-come, first-served basis, consistent with most dispersed camping on National Forest land.

âś… What is Worth Choosing
Basin Cr Dispersed Campground is the ideal choice for a specific type of Montana camper: the self-sufficient adventurer. It stands in stark contrast to crowded, highly developed campgrounds, offering a slice of authentic wilderness experience that embodies the state's rugged outdoor spirit.
- For the Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Enthusiast: If your idea of a great trip involves unloading your ATV or UTV and exploring designated 50-inch trails that lead to high-elevation lookouts like Daisy Peak, this location provides the perfect launching point. The ability to ride out from your camp is a major convenience.
 - For the True Escape: If you crave minimal traffic, maximum quiet, and the chance to observe wildlife (like the occasional visiting cow or native elk and deer), the dispersed, low-density nature of this campground delivers on a tranquil experience.
 - For the Primitive Camper: If you prefer a rustic setting where you must rely on your own supplies—bringing your own water, managing your own waste, and setting up camp with minimal direction—this location offers the rewarding challenge and peace of a true primitive camping experience in a breathtaking setting.

While some reviewers have noted concerns about limited tree cover at certain spots and the rough access road, these factors actually filter out less prepared visitors, preserving the peaceful atmosphere for those who are ready for a real Montana mountain experience. If you are well-prepared, seek solitude, and value trail access over amenities, Basin Cr Dispersed Campground is a hidden gem in the Lewis and Clark National Forest that is well worth the journey.

Customer Reviews
The road is not the best, but also not the worst, at least not in the state. In a three-quarter ton truck with a camper it is a slow crawl in and out. There are a few campsites along the road, but there is barely any traffic. The only trail is 50” and goes for about five miles before it meets any other trails, but the rides were still fun. One day we rode up to Daisy Peak (Daisy Peak has beautiful views of a lot of the Little Belts), then down to Daisy Dean Campground then came back. The next day we rode the Haymaker Canyon Trail, when you come from the north, the first part is very very muddy, and would not be a fun time on a motorcycle, but we did not go all the way to the narrows simply because we’ve ridden through there a few times when camped at Haymaker Campground and it was getting late. All in all it was a fun trip, and some cows came to visit later in the trip. 3 stars due to some spots not having great tree cover, and only one trail.
Do not go here! Horrible road and very ugly. Go to red lodge for camping.
