Beartooth Lake Campground is majestically located on US-212, near Cody, WY 82414, USA. This places it directly along the iconic Beartooth All-American Highway, a designated National Scenic Byway. The campground sits at a high elevation, approximately 9,000 feet above sea level, placing it squarely within the breathtaking alpine environment of the Shoshone National Forest.
For us locals in Wyoming, accessing Beartooth Lake Campground typically involves traveling from Cody via State Highway 120 north, turning onto State Highway 296 (the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway), and then turning right onto US Highway 212, which is the Beartooth All-American Highway. The drive itself is an integral part of the experience, offering stunning vistas, switchbacks, and panoramic views that are unique to this high-country region. While the Beartooth Highway is well-maintained, its high elevation means it is typically only open from Memorial Day to mid-October, weather permitting, so checking conditions is crucial before planning a trip. The campground's proximity to Cooke City, Montana, also makes it a strategic stop for those venturing further towards Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance. Despite its elevation and the winding roads, the accessibility ensures that campers can reach this pristine location to enjoy its unparalleled beauty, though a maximum spur length of 32 feet is noted for campsites, meaning some very large RVs might find turns a bit tight.
- Campsites: Offers 21 individual campsites, suitable for both tent camping and RVs (with a maximum recommended spur length of 32 feet).
- First-Come, First-Served: All sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are accepted. Arriving early, especially on weekends, is advised.
- Potable Water: Accessible drinking water is available at the campground, a crucial amenity in this remote setting.
- Vault Toilets: Well-maintained vault toilets are provided for convenience.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table for comfortable outdoor dining.
- Fire Rings/Grills: Campers will find fire rings, often with cooking grates, at their sites for campfires and outdoor cooking (always check for current fire restrictions).
- Food Storage: Bear-proof food storage is required and often provided (e.g., bear boxes), due to the presence of wildlife in the area.
- Nearby Supplies: There is a store nearby for essential supplies, offering a convenient option for campers.
- No Cell Service: Be prepared for an unplugged experience, as cell service is generally not available at the campground.
- Motorized Boating Allowed: Motorized boat use is allowed on Beartooth Lake, alongside non-motorized options like kayaking and canoeing.
- Absolutely Stunning Views: Consistently highlighted as having "absolutely amazing" views of Beartooth Lake and the surrounding mountains, offering unparalleled scenic beauty.
- High-Altitude Serenity: Located at approximately 9,000 feet, the campground provides a crisp, refreshing, and profoundly peaceful alpine environment.

- Wildlife Encounters: The natural setting provides opportunities for viewing diverse wildlife, including elk, enhancing the wilderness experience.
- Hiking Opportunities: Numerous trails in the vicinity, including those leading into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, cater to day hikers and backpackers.

Cannot overstate how absolutely amazing this place is. A perfect spot to stay the night and enjoy the lake and it's trails. The lake was absolutely freezing however no force on heaven or earth could stop me from dipping my toes in a lake more beautiful than previously thought possible. I woke up to a freezing morning to walk to the lake and see the steam rise off her waters. I enjoyed the morning and glassed the opposite shores to see elk running across the other side. Hearing their calls made me want to live the rest of my life at that very spot and remain perfectly content. If you're looking for a spot to spend the night with a view. This is the place for you.
A wonderful campground hugging the margins of Beartooth Lake. I snagged a spot on the smaller and less-utilized C loop and had a great afternoon and evening. A little exploring of the area, some reading, and a chance to reorganize some of my gear. After dark I took a few pics to document the site's dark sky qualities. Most of the area around the Beartooth Hwy are pretty radically dark and this campsite was no exception. I took this photo after dark but before twilight was fully over. I liked the sight of the campsite in the next loop with their fire burning, illuminating the trees nearby. Great spot.
Great lake and campground, but someone(s) don't respect the bears, as in keeping their FOOD properly stored. This creates a massive problem, obviously. Respect the rules. Be safe.
This was one of the stops and almost the final stop on our trip through a small portion of the west. This is basically a first come first serve campsite with a small fee for staying. The lake water is extremely cold so it wouldn't be too much fun for swimming in. They are normal sized campsites with a firepit and a bench. Be cautious though that a bear and her Cubs like to walk around the lake occasionally so the bear boxes do need to be used and any other food needs to be kept in a hard bodied vehicle, not a soft top wrangler or anything like that. There is a few people there with medical knowledge and advise for the area, which came in handy as one of my friends fell down a portion of the mountain. We helped him down, rowed him across the lake, and they bandaged him up what they could. Then we made our way to the hospital in cody.
Stopped here to stretch our Legs on our way to Yellowstone. What a great View.
