This article will delve into what makes this campground a fantastic choice for Oklahoma residents, covering its accessibility, the services it offers, its standout features, and why it continues to be a favorite for local campers.

Location and Accessibility

Below the Dam Campground is strategically situated at US-270, Howe, OK 74940, USA. This address places it conveniently near Wister Lake, a popular body of water in southeastern Oklahoma. For many residents across the state, reaching the campground is a straightforward journey, involving well-maintained highways leading directly to the Howe area. The proximity to US-270 ensures easy access for both cars and recreational vehicles, removing much of the logistical stress often associated with traveling to more remote camping destinations.

While the campground offers a serene natural setting, its location doesn't mean it's completely isolated. Howe, Oklahoma, is a small town, but it provides basic necessities and a sense of local community. The accessibility extends to the area surrounding the dam and spillway, with roads that are well-maintained, allowing for exploration and easy navigation. This ease of access is a significant advantage for families with children or those who prefer not to venture too far off the beaten path.

It's important to note, based on customer reviews, that during heavy rain, parts of the campground, particularly those "below the dam," can experience pooling and become muddy. This is a crucial consideration for campers, especially those planning to tent camp or who are sensitive to muddy conditions. However, the natural beauty of the area often outweighs this occasional inconvenience for many visitors, who simply plan accordingly by bringing appropriate footwear and being mindful of weather forecasts.

Services Offered

Below the Dam Campground focuses on providing essential services to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. While it may not offer all the bells and whistles of a resort, its simplicity is often a part of its appeal, allowing visitors to connect more directly with nature. The available services are designed to meet the fundamental needs of campers.

  • Primitive Camping: The campground offers opportunities for primitive camping, ideal for those who prefer a more rustic experience with minimal amenities. This is a great option for true outdoor adventurers.
  • Water Spigots: Access to water spigots is generally available, providing potable water for drinking and other camping needs. This is a significant convenience for both tent and RV campers.
  • Restrooms: While reviews indicate the restrooms are "no frills," they are present and shared with the general parking area, providing a basic necessity for visitors.
  • Picnic Tables: Most, if not all, campsites are equipped with picnic tables, offering a designated area for meals and gatherings.
  • Lantern Hooks: Many sites also include lantern hooks, a thoughtful addition for evening lighting and convenience.
  • Grills/Fire Rings: Campers can typically find grills or fire rings at their sites, allowing for outdoor cooking and enjoyable campfires.

It is worth noting that some reviews suggest there may be limited or non-functioning hookups (electric/sewer) at certain sites. Visitors planning to rely on such amenities should confirm availability and functionality before their trip, perhaps by contacting the park management directly if such information is publicly available.

If you stay at Wister Lake and there's a chance of rain, DO NOT stay below the dam. The rain pools in the campground and it's a mud hole. What a muddy mess !
