Bessman-Kemp Campground Introduce

Bessman-Kemp Campground, situated west of Alden, Iowa, along the scenic Iowa River, offers a serene and accessible outdoor experience within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category. This 71-acre property, acquired in the early 1980s as a park and wildlife preserve, is managed by Hardin County Conservation. It serves as a popular destination for locals and visitors seeking a blend of tranquility and recreational opportunities. This objective introduction will delve into the campground's environment, services, features, and available promotional information, based on publicly available details.

The environment of Bessman-Kemp Campground is largely defined by its picturesque location along the Iowa River. The property spans both sides of the river, with primary access on the south. This natural setting encompasses a mix of open spaces and wooded areas, providing a pleasant backdrop for various outdoor activities. The presence of the river makes it particularly appealing for water-based recreation and offers a calming auditory experience. The campground is part of the larger Iowa River Greenbelt, a significant ecological corridor known for its diverse wildlife habitats, including aquatic, grassland, savanna/shrub, riparian, and woodland environments. This rich biodiversity means campers may encounter a variety of plants and animals, enhancing the natural immersion. The terrain is generally flat, making it easy to navigate, with scattered trees providing natural shade. The overall atmosphere is one of peace and quiet, conducive to relaxation and reconnecting with nature, removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life. The natural setting emphasizes the park's dual role as both a recreational campground and a wildlife preserve.

Within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, Bessman-Kemp Campground provides a range of essential services and goods to facilitate a comfortable stay. The campground features 12 electrical campsites, catering to RVs and trailers, offering convenience with power hookups. These sites are designed to accommodate campers who prefer the comfort of electricity for their recreational vehicles. In addition to electrical sites, primitive camping options are available for those who prefer a more traditional and rustic tent camping experience. These sites typically do not have electrical hookups, allowing for a more unadulterated connection with the outdoors. For visitors seeking a step up from traditional camping, Bessman-Kemp Campground also offers two single-family cabins for rent. These cabins, such as the Eagle's Nest and Oak Cabin, provide a more comfortable stay with amenities that may include queen-sized beds, sleeper sofas, air conditioning, and kitchenettes, offering a "glamping" alternative. Each cabin typically includes outdoor features like a picnic table and a large fire ring. Essential facilities for all campers include vault restrooms, ensuring basic sanitation needs are met. A shelter house is also available, providing a communal space for picnics, gatherings, or seeking refuge from the elements. While a full-service camp store like those at larger commercial campgrounds is not explicitly mentioned, campers are generally advised to come prepared with their own supplies, though basic provisions might be found in nearby Alden.

The features of Bessman-Kemp Campground contribute significantly to its appeal as an outdoor destination. The most prominent feature is its direct access to the Iowa River. This river access is carry-down, meaning visitors can launch canoes, kayaks, or small non-motorized boats directly into the river, making it an excellent spot for paddling enthusiasts. The river is also a popular spot for fishing, offering opportunities for anglers to cast a line and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The campground's integration into the Iowa River Greenbelt means that campers have access to a broader network of natural areas. While not explicitly detailed as within the campground, the surrounding Landahl Park area offers opportunities for activities such as mountain biking and hiking, allowing visitors to explore the diverse landscapes. The picnic area and shelter house provide ideal spots for day-use visitors or for campers to gather for meals and social interaction. The provision of both electrical and primitive campsites offers flexibility, catering to different camping preferences and levels of comfort. The two rental cabins are a notable feature, providing a more comfortable and weatherproof accommodation option, ideal for families or those new to camping who desire more amenities. The campground's operational season typically runs from April through September, allowing for prime spring, summer, and early fall camping experiences. The management by Hardin County Conservation ensures the park's natural integrity and provides access to local expertise regarding the area's ecology and recreational opportunities.

Regarding promotional information, Bessman-Kemp Campground, as a county park facility, may have a different approach compared to large commercial campgrounds. Specific, widespread promotional campaigns are less common. However, information regarding rates, availability, and how to make reservations is publicly available through the Hardin County Conservation Board's official website. Current rates for electrical sites and cabins would be listed there, often with variations for 30 Amp and 50 Amp service, as well as for primitive sites. It is generally recommended to contact Hardin County Conservation directly by phone or email for the most up-to-date information on booking and any seasonal specials. While explicit "promotions" like loyalty programs or discounts (e.g., AAA, Good Sam) are typically not offered by county campgrounds, the pricing structure itself often provides a cost-effective alternative to privately owned campgrounds with more extensive amenities. The value proposition lies in the affordable access to a natural, well-maintained environment for camping and outdoor activities. Information about the campground's end-of-season would also be communicated via their official channels, including their Facebook page, which serves as a platform for updates and communication with the public. Prospective visitors should check the Hardin County Conservation website for current operating hours, reservation policies, and any specific guidelines for visitors to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

In conclusion, Bessman-Kemp Campground stands as a valuable offering within the Campgrounds & RV Parks sector, providing a tranquil and nature-rich camping experience in Alden, Iowa. Its environment, characterized by its location along the Iowa River and within the larger Greenbelt, offers abundant opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and general outdoor enjoyment. The services provided, including electrical and primitive campsites, along with comfortable cabin rentals, cater to a diverse range of preferences. Key features like river access and a communal shelter house enhance the visitor experience. While promotional information is primarily conveyed through county conservation channels, the campground's inherent appeal lies in its affordable and accessible natural setting, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of Iowa's outdoors.

Tent camped on a road trip. Had to change plans a few days earlier and a lot of availability here on a Monday. We camped next to the camp host and he was very friendly and caring. The only other people there were staying in one of the campers. We had our dogs. There weren’t any mosquitoes, but that was most likely because there was a nice constant breeze. It was a beautiful campground that was well kept. It had water from a pump spigot and porta-potties.
