Big Bay Town Park Introduce
🌲 Welcome to Big Bay Town Park: A Wisconsin Camping Treasure
For Wisconsin residents seeking the quintessential Northwoods escape, look no further than **Big Bay Town Park** on beautiful Madeline Island. Nestled within the Apostle Islands archipelago, this award-winning, 61-site campground is consistently celebrated as one of the most impressive natural areas in the state. Known for what visitors affectionately call "the best beach in northern Wisconsin," this town-operated park offers a pristine blend of stunning natural beauty, modern amenities, and access to a wealth of outdoor adventures. Whether you're a seasoned RVer, a traditional tent camper, or a family looking for a memorable lakeside retreat, Big Bay Town Park is a destination that delivers an authentic Lake Superior experience.
The park is a cornerstone of the Town of La Pointe, providing spectacular views and the only public access to the magnificent Big Bay Lagoon, which runs parallel to the beach. Visitors often praise the clean, updated facilities and the genuinely beautiful surroundings, making it a highly recommended spot for a Wisconsin getaway. It offers the perfect base camp for exploring Madeline Island and the surrounding Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
🗺️ Location and Accessibility
Big Bay Town Park is situated on **Madeline Island**, the largest of the Apostle Islands. This geographical setting inherently offers an unmatched sense of escape and tranquility for visitors from mainland Wisconsin and beyond. To reach this serene destination, a short ferry ride from Bayfield, WI, to the town of La Pointe is required. The park itself is located approximately six miles from the ferry dock, making it easily accessible via car, bicycle, or moped, which are available to rent in town.
The physical location is:
La Pointe, WI 54850, USA
The park is strategically positioned to share a mile-plus-long stretch of sandy beach on the southern side of Lake Superior with the adjacent Big Bay State Park, offering extended exploration opportunities. Once on the island, clear signage guides visitors to the park entrance. It’s important to note that the island location contributes to the "off-the-grid" feel, as cell service can be limited, though complimentary Wi-Fi is available near the main office building for essential communication.

Customer Reviews
Camped there on site 28. The campgrounds are nice. There wasn't much for mosquitoes but lots of fly. Site 28 was right by the main office building. The sites there has its own parking spot. Office hours are open from 8-4. If you check in after hours they have a list of incoming campers listed on the office door. Bathroom does have quite a bit of bugs. The showers were a little on the down side. They do have one shower for family/wheelchair accessible. Showers are on the pricey side per min. During our 4 day stay there we didn't see the host at all.
Beautiful beach! The sand was great and there was plenty of beach to spread out. The water was shallow for at least 20 feet which was super nice.
We camp here every year now with a group of friends and we always have the best experience. Love making memories in this wonderful place. Bathrooms are nice, camp hosts are super helpful and friendly, and the access to the beach just can't be beat. My favorite place to camp, by far.
Love this place. Dog friendly. Beautiful beach. The opportunity to rent a canoe was the highlight of the stop.
We spent a lovely night in the beautiful campground, a little rain on our tent, but not too bad. Grab it yourself wood always available. Bathroom not too far and water nearby. The best part was the beach in the bay the next morning. It was gorgeous! Thankfully it was a very hot day, so the very cold Lake Superior water was refreshing.
