Big Bog Campground Introduce
Step into the Wild: Discovering the Big Bog Campground Experience
For Minnesotans seeking a genuinely unique outdoor experience, the **Big Bog Campground** at the Big Bog State Recreation Area near Waskish, MN, offers a destination unlike any other. Often referred to as Minnesota's "last true wilderness," this area is home to the largest patterned peat bog in the contiguous United States, a vast and fascinating ecosystem that promises both tranquility and education.
The campground itself is situated in the park's Southern Unit, providing a convenient, welcoming base camp for exploring the surrounding natural wonders. It offers a blend of rustic charm and essential amenities, appealing to RV owners, tent campers, and even those preferring a cozy cabin stay. Situated alongside the slow-moving **Tamarac River**, which flows into Upper Red Lake, the site is a prime spot for anglers and paddlers alike. While a few visitors note its proximity to the highway, the overall experience is dominated by the quiet hum of nature and the sense of adventure that comes from exploring one of Minnesota's most significant and ecologically rich landscapes. It's a place where you can learn about carnivorous plants, climb a historic fire tower, and find world-class fishing—all in one spot.
Location and Accessibility: Near Waskish and Upper Red Lake
The Big Bog Campground is a core part of the **Big Bog State Recreation Area**, conveniently located in north-central Minnesota. The site sits right off **Minnesota State Highway 72**, north of the small community of Waskish. Its accessibility by car or RV is straightforward, making it an easy drive-in destination, even for larger vehicles.
Address: 55716 MN-72, Waskish, MN 56685, USA
The park is divided into two distinct units, both easily reachable via Highway 72. The Southern Unit contains the campground, visitor center, cabins, and main amenities, while the Northern Unit is home to the spectacular, mile-long bog boardwalk. This central highway location means visitors can quickly transition from the comfortable campground to the unique wilderness of the bog, or access the nearby fishing opportunities on Upper Red Lake via the Tamarac River.
Services Offered (Balancing Primitive Charm with Comfort)
The campground at Big Bog is celebrated for offering a comfortable stay while keeping the focus on the natural environment. Unlike purely primitive sites, it provides several key modern amenities, ensuring a pleasant experience for families and RVers, while still being "very quiet" and clean.
- Electric Hookups: There are 26 **electric campsites** (30 and 50 amp service available) out of a total of 31 drive-in sites, accommodating both RVs and tents.
- Water Availability: While water is not at every site, **communal fresh water spigots** are available throughout the campground for filling up, addressing the noted lack of water at individual electric posts.
- **Modern Shower and Restroom Facilities**: A clean shower/restroom facility with **flush toilets and free hot showers** is centrally located, with some services remaining open longer into the fall than other Minnesota State Parks.
- Docks and Boat Access: The campground, situated on the Tamarac River, offers **nice docks and a ramp to the river**, allowing campers to easily launch and leave their boats in the water during their stay.
- Fish Cleaning House: A dedicated facility is provided for anglers coming off the Tamarac River and Upper Red Lake.
- Camper Cabins: Five fully-equipped, year-round camper cabins are available for reservation, offering a more luxurious camping option.
- No Dump Station: Campers should be aware that there is **no dump station** on site and plan accordingly for waste disposal outside of the park.
Features / Highlights That Make It Unique
Big Bog Campground’s highlights are rooted in its incredible natural setting and the unique access it provides to this significant ecological area.
- **The Mile-Long Bog Boardwalk**: The centerpiece of the park. This **2-mile round trip boardwalk** allows visitors to walk right into the fragile, vast patterned peat bog, viewing unique flora like pitcher plants, sundews, and orchids (seasonal). It is fully accessible and offers an engaging, educational experience.
- **Tamarac River Access**: The river location is ideal for **fishing and paddling**. The river is a peaceful, slow-moving route for canoeing and kayaking, leading directly to the world-renowned fishing waters of Upper Red Lake (famous for walleye and trophy northern pike).
- **Climb the Fire Tower**: A **100-foot fire tower** is available for visitors to climb, offering "great views" of the vast bog, the tamarack forests, and the immense blue water of Upper Red Lake to the west.
- **Wildlife and Plant Life**: The unique bog habitat is a haven for rare plants (many on the state's threatened or endangered list) and numerous bird species, providing excellent opportunities for nature photography and birding.
- **Year-Round Camping**: The availability of electric sites and camper cabins ensures the campground is open and ready for visitors even in the cold, snowy Minnesota winter months.

Very quiet, primitive camping. No dump, communal water available. Nice docks and ramp to the river. Will stay again.
A place I didn't know I needed to go to! I learned so much about bogs and peat, who knew they'd be interesting!?! The campground was lovely and clean. Free showers, docks and piers of off the campground, fire tower to climb for great views. The 2 mile round trip bog boardwalk was great. We were here in October so no orchids but no mosquitoes either. They are brutal in the summer. There's not much around here for groceries so come fully stocked. Campground is right off highway so you will hear the big trucks but it's not awful. There is electricity at campsites but no water. You can fill up with water at the fresh water spigots in the campground. There is no dump station.
Very nice and clean campground! It is in walking distance from Upper Red Lake Beach. Electric only sites. Restrooms and showers were well kept. Park contains a dock on the Tamarac River, camper only boat launch and a store with souvenirs. Staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. A short trail will take you to an accessible fishing dock. The Northern Unit is 9 miles away and has a great Bog Boardwalk that is worth the visit. The campground also has one of the remaining fire towers and it can be climbed
It's a great campground for families, but the sites are very open and close together. Not exactly a serene peaceful night in the wilderness, but lovely all the same.
Great swimming, fire tower, and paddle options. We love this campground, but the real gem is the beach and picnic area across the road. Awesome spot for a family to play in the shallows of the big lake and catch the sunset.
