4.5/5 Pros: easy, short (1-1.5 miles each way depending on where you park), mostly shady. We saw woodpeckers, tiny waterfall, small bridges, and crossed some streams. Bring binoculars. Pretty much all the other hikers were friendly. We went on a weekend around lunch time. Restroom. Tables. Benches. Fire pit. Good for most, including kids, dogs and many seniors. No mountain bikes in theory - we saw 1 as we were leaving. Cons: Graffiti. Dog poo. A bit of litter. Not to picturesque. No peak.
Very gorgeous area for a leisurely walk in the woods anytime of the year. There are a handful of trails, ones that take you steeply up the nearby slopes for terrific valley views or a more flat and calm one adjacent to the creek. There are small waterfalls, bridges, tree swings, and more to make these walks all the more memorable.
This is a great place to take friends, out of town relatives and families to for some beautiful Day Hikes near a stream in Glendora that is easy to get to for anyone in the LA or Orange county area. A lot of the trails are shaded and pretty easy on the hiking scale. Some are a little more challenging but not that bad with very little elevation gain. The trails are very clean and remember to leave no trace. You can bring your dogs, they just need to be on a leash. The Gate opens around 7am and even during the day it does not get that hot. They do have a group Boy Scout only camping facility which is why I was there, which was awesome. They also have cabanas, tables and bathrooms for hikers. The Big Dalton trail does go through the campground, which is about a mile in and a mile out turnaround. Grab a map at the trail head to guide you. A little farther up the road you will find other trails on your right for a bit more challenge. In the summer it will get warmer up there and the bugs will come out, but right now until about May its a great little get away...For Camping with scouts its great, water is in camp, restrooms and shade with tables for eating and hanging out and close to town if you forgot something. See you on the trail....
My son and I went for a lovely hike through the loop. It was about a mile with my son. It's my first one a beautiful River alongside the trail.
The drought is real it looked sad and dry. The creek was completely dry in some spots and others were only puddles or mud. Doesn't help that the damn holds what little water there may be coming down the mountain.
