Customer Reviews
just spent 12 days at the Big pines dispersed campground area. 3 of my adolescent grandchildren helped to set it all up. This is quite a large area that also includes Twin Bridges. it is comprised of both Hat Creek and Lost Creek where they come together. it's a wonderful spot. we did tent camping, other people had travel trailers, motorhomes, and adventure Vans. The spots are spaced quite a bit apart I mean long ways. so there's no disturbing anybody. now since this is a dispersed area camping there are no facilities. we had a portable RV toilet which I purchased for the camp and my pregnant daughter so we put it near her tent in our bathroom tent and it was great worked out fantastically. unfortunately the boys had to use the bucket system. but they did well as well. My family is going to return to this quite often since it is a convenient 1 hour drive from Redding. The creek is fantastic we got our own little waterfall area and the Creek noise helped everybody to sleep quite well. it was cool in the mornings as the wind comes down from Mount Lassen and at this time because of the late winter they're still a lot of snow so it was cold but we got our heat wave and it was still nice. The grandchildren had a wonderful time. there are no reservations and no fees you can stay 14 days. there's two stores within easy driving distance one is maybe five or six miles at the most and the other might be just beyond that but they're close. there is no cell service. there is no internet. unfortunately my grandchildren had to use downloaded items to play. but small price to pay for being in such a beautiful spot. usually the spots have fire rings etc this one had a pretty nice fire ring setup and we help fix it up a little more. I would suggest if you're going to explore the area off-road that you bring your appropriate vehicle. many people had side by sides and dirt bikes. The area is patrol regularly by Forest service. I believe it's a can't miss good time and the cost is definitely great a wonderful experience of being in the woods and for those who don't want to travel farther out this is a great spot. You're close to Lassen Park and Burney Falls and wonderful fishing and hiking throughout the whole area including thousand lakes wilderness.
Very nice campground, perfect for tent camping. The sites were big and well spaced. The bathrooms were pit toilets, but spotless. It was super quiet the two nights we were there (end of June). Only a few other sites were occupied. The water pump was a lot of work, but the water tasted good. I would definitely camp there again.
Camped there in June 2021. Campground is next to some houses & Hat creek. Well-spaced campsites, there no shrubbery between sites, it is an open area and lots of shade. Other campers were quiet when we were there. As mentioned the sound of the creek helps with the bit of road noise. No problem with bugs. Weather was perfect.
We camped here for the 4th of July weekend, as the campgrounds in the National Park were quite crowded, and we didn't regret it! The nicest campsites are along the creek. The calming sound from the creek masks the noise of the cars from the road. There are vault toilets only, but they were spotless. There is drinking water that comes from a pump, but we didn't try it. Firewood was available from a tree that had been cut down. There is a very hospitable host on the site. It's a good location between Manzanita Lake and Cinder Cone.
Great camp ground, camp host is friendly and available to answer questions. Close to Subway Cave & Spatter Cone Trail. Bathrooms are cleanest of any campgrounds I've been too. Creek right there. Favorite of our family!
Good campground right next to the upper hat creek. Campground host was very nice with clean pit toilets.
