Big Sandy Campground Introduce

Welcome to Big Sandy Campground, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Boulder, WY. This small, first-come-first-serve campground offers a unique and rustic camping experience for outdoor enthusiasts. With only 4 spots available, it’s perfect for those seeking a quiet retreat amidst nature. At just $7 per night, it’s an affordable option for backpackers and travelers alike.

The campground is equipped with bear boxes for secure food storage, ensuring a safe environment for both campers and wildlife. While the bathroom facilities are shared with the nearby trailhead parking lot, they provide essential amenities for your stay. Due to its popularity, especially during peak seasons, it’s advisable to arrive early to secure a spot, as all sites are often taken by mid-afternoon.

Big Sandy Campground is located by a bustling trailhead, making it a convenient base for exploring the surrounding wilderness. However, the close proximity to the trailhead means that the campsites are tight and offer limited privacy. For those seeking a more secluded experience, there are wild sites available nearby where you can set up camp.

  • First-come-first-serve with 4 spots available

Customer Feedback: Visitors have praised Big Sandy Campground for its affordability and convenient location. Many appreciate the presence of bear boxes, which add an extra layer of safety. While the shared bathroom facilities can sometimes be less than ideal, the overall experience is highly valued by those looking for a simple and straightforward camping adventure. Some campers have noted the tight campsites and lack of privacy but still find the campground to be a great starting point for exploring the area.

Tiny first come first serve campground with 4 spots. $7/per night. Bear boxes present. It shares the bathroom with the trailhead parking lot. (which can sometimes get a little gross) All sites taken by 3 pm on a Thursday afternoon in September. This area is super crowded and not designed to deal with the massive influx of backpackers in the past 10 years.

Extremely tight campsites by an extremely busy trailhead. No privacy. On site bear boxes for food storage. I setup my truck in a wild site before the campground.

If hiking is your main objective, this is the place. There are plenty of hiking trails to explore the Winds. I came here on Tuesday and the camp ground was empty, parking lot was packed though. Most people come here to hike and park on the trailhead free. But if you are campers with big RV and stay in your rig most of the time, this place is not for you. There is no cell service, hook-up and trash disposal. The last 10 miles of dirt road is a challenge for most cars, SUV or high ground clearance vehicles recommended. I made it with my AWD Minivan and I saw a Prius parked next to my campsite. This is the most popular trailhead in Wyoming as far as I know but I will come back again in the future.

Small campground, pit toilet is at the trailhead. Most people backpack or rock climb. But there are lots of day hikes that can be done from this trailhead/ campground. I would only recommend tent or rugged trailers.

Always crowded, especially on holiday weekends. The road can get pretty washboarded and rough towards the end. There's a pit toilet and the trailhead is clearly marked. Also has a stock campground.
