Location and Accessibility

Billy Creek Recreation Area is nestled deep within the scenic Ouachita National Forest at Hodgen, OK 74939, USA. Hodgen is located in Le Flore County, in the southeastern part of Oklahoma, a region renowned for its mountainous terrain, dense forests, and abundant natural beauty. While the area offers a sense of seclusion, it remains accessible for Oklahomans willing to venture into the heart of the forest. The drive to Billy Creek typically involves navigating U.S. and state highways, eventually transitioning to forest roads. According to various accounts, reaching the campground might involve some dirt roads that can be narrow or less maintained, especially after inclement weather. It's advisable to check road conditions, particularly for those driving lower-clearance vehicles or large RVs, as the primitive nature of the area suggests it's best suited for tents or smaller, more rugged setups. Despite its secluded feel, the site’s proximity to larger natural landmarks like the Talimena Scenic Drive and the extensive Ouachita National Recreation Trail ensures that once you arrive, you are perfectly positioned to explore a vast network of outdoor attractions. This accessibility for prepared local adventurers makes Billy Creek a prime spot for a true wilderness immersion within Oklahoma.

Services Offered

Billy Creek Recreation Area prides itself on offering a primitive camping experience, meaning visitors should come prepared for a less amenity-rich stay compared to developed campgrounds. This is part of its charm for those seeking a true wilderness feel. Based on public data and reviews, here's what you can generally expect in terms of services:

  • Primitive Campsites: The campground features around 12 primitive campsites, suitable primarily for tent camping. Each site typically includes a picnic table, a standard iron charcoal grill, and a rock-ring fire pit for cooking and warmth.
  • Vault Toilets: "Spooky" vault toilets are available on-site, providing basic restroom facilities. It's good practice to bring your own hand sanitizer and toilet paper, as is common with primitive facilities.
  • No Potable Water: This is a crucial point – there is NO potable (drinking) water available on site. Campers MUST bring all their own water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene.
  • No Electricity: There are no electric hookups at any of the campsites, reinforcing the off-grid experience.
  • No Trash Cans or Dumpsters: Another key aspect of the "pack it in, pack it out" philosophy. Visitors are required to remove ALL trash they generate, including food waste, to maintain the pristine environment and deter wildlife.
  • First-Come, First-Served: Sites are generally available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are typically taken. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, though the area is often less crowded than more popular spots.

Stayed overnight here during a monster thunderstorm. It was very dark once the sun went down and no moonlight. Then the lightning started. I felt like I was inside of the storm itself. Huge thick bolts flashed all around the camp and silhouetting the tall trees. The next morning I was able to captured some great photos. I’m only giving it 3 stars because of the limited time there.

This is my favorite "secret campground" in Eastern Oklahoma, perhaps! There's nothing secret about it, but somehow no one seems to know it's here! The facilities are for primitive camping, with spooky vault toilets and standard iron charcoal grills and rock-ring firepits. There is NO POTABLE WATER on site, nor electricity, so come prepared and bring plenty of water with you! This campground is not for everyone for sure--- it's in Oklahoma's bear country, which means you do have to take extra precautions, and there aren't any luxuries for those who aren't used to primitive camping. HOWEVER, if you like peace, quiet, exquisite natural scenery, the sound of burbling water and frogs and wind through the trees, and isolated primitive camping and hiking and aquatic exploration, this place may be for you!! If you do visit this beautiful, hallowed ground, please, keep it as lovely as it had always been! I was hesitant to review this location at all in case people suddenly flock to it, but it is too perfect not to share. There are NO TRASH CANS OR DUMPSTERS on site, so you will have to plan on portaging out all the trash you bring with you (food waste included, in case you want to attract a black bear like I did that one time!). This site is an unmarred gem sequestered away in these ancient hills, please, treat it with love and respect as it deserves! Thank you, and have fun at Billy Creek!!!

We passed through on the way to some off-road 4x4 trails. Nobody was there, but it looked like a cool place to camp.
