Birch Lake Campground Introduce
š² **Introduction / Overview**
For Minnesotans drawn to the deep woods and the promise of a truly unplugged experience, **Birch Lake Campground** in Ely, MN, is a perennial favorite. Located strategically within the magnificent **Superior National Forest** and serving as a crucial gateway to the world-renowned **Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW)**, this campground delivers the quintessential North Woods escape. Birch Lake Campground is specifically designed for the outdoor enthusiast who appreciates a rustic, secluded setting paired with essential, well-maintained facilities.
The campground is set along the expansive shores of Birch Lake, a large body of water spanning over 7,600 acres with an extensive 80 miles of shoreline dotted with beautiful islands. The landscape is dominated by dense aspen and birch forests, providing deep shade and exceptional privacy for each campsite. The overall atmosphere here is one of quiet retreat, where the sounds of loons and wildlife often replace the noise of city life. While some campgrounds cater to high-amenity RV parks, Birch Lake embraces its "primitive" nature, offering a space where you can truly connect with the natural world.
Visitors consistently praise the care taken in maintaining the grounds. Sites are well-kept, and the facilities, though rustic (vault toilets, hand-pump water), are noted for being clean and stockedāeven featuring helpful additions like solar motion lights in the night-time facilities. This attention to detail, combined with the incredibly secluded setting, makes Birch Lake Campground a top-tier choice for local residents looking for a genuine, peaceful camping experience in Minnesota's Arrowhead Region. Beyond traditional camping, the site offers unique accommodations, including two reservable camper cabins and several backcountry sites for a more remote adventure.

š **Location and Accessibility**
Birch Lake Campground is conveniently situated approximately 13 miles outside of the historic town of **Ely, MN**. Its official address is **Little Lake Rd, Ely, MN 55731, USA**. This prime location places the campground directly within the expansive **Superior National Forest**, offering campers immediate access to millions of acres of public land perfect for recreation.
The campground is an easy drive from the city of Ely, known as the central hub for all BWCAW-related activities. This proximity means campers are far enough away for total seclusion, yet close enough to resupply, explore local attractions, enjoy dining, or visit outfitters for last-minute gear needs. The campground itself is split into two loopsāNorth and Southāwith all sites being near the water and well-separated by the dense forest, enhancing the feeling of a personal wilderness retreat.
For those traveling with vehicles, the sites are shaded drive-in spots suitable for tents, trailers, and moderately sized RVs, though they are not specifically designed as pull-throughs. Accessibility is an important consideration for the Forest Service; while the overall experience is rustic, key facilities, including the two camper cabins and several single-family campsites (specifically Sites 1, 3, and 6), are noted as being ADA accessible, though guests should inquire about specific accommodations to ensure they meet their needs. The remote setting and gravel roads require careful driving, but the destination rewards visitors with authentic North Woods solitude.

Customer Reviews
Excellent campground that is well kept. Sites were clean, bathrooms were cleaned, stocked and even lit at night view small solar motion lights! Of particular note, the bugs were much lighter than expected, definitely less mosquitos than we were figuring would be there during the wet year we've had! š
They have a few cabins, but we haven't used them. We use our motorhome. Very secluded and primitive. Great!
Far off of the pavement, a wonderful secluded little camp area. No power or running water but there is a well with a hand pump and the water from it was good. Really recharged my inner self while here. Worth the 12 hour drive to get here. Fishing wasnt good but met a guy who pulled a 3 1/2 lb pike. Nights are super quiet. Facilities are kept clean and neat.
Very clean campground and the hosts are very nice! Sites are spaced out so youāre not right next to your neighborhood which we appreciated. Most sites also have a personal trail to the lake. They also have a boat dock to the beautiful lake, we went paddle boarding there and had a great time. The campground itself was a bit out of the way down a gravel road which was a nice getaway from busy life. Definitely would visit again.
This was a lovely and well kept campground. Our site was in the South Loop (#29) with lake access about 15 feet away - perfect for canoeing and day trips on the water. There was generous space between campsites with lots of tree coverage for privacy. Just like every other campground in northern MN in mid/late Spring, it was extremely buggy with mosquitos and gnats. Bug head nets, bug spray, and screen shelters recommended! The site host was attentive and had firewood for sale for $8/bundle. We enjoyed a day trip to downtown Ely, which was about a 30 min drive. If headed into town, I definitely recommend checking out the Bass Lake Trailhead waterfall, Dorothy Molter Museum (with a cold root beer), and the International Wolf Center.
