Bitterroot Flat Campground Introduce
Bitterroot Flat Campground offers a unique blend of nature and comfort, nestled in the heart of Montana's scenic landscape. Located at 59825 on Rock Creek Rd in Clinton, this charming campground provides an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure and relaxation. With its well-maintained facilities and serene environment, Bitterroot Flat Campground is a perfect destination for campers, hikers, and nature lovers visiting the area.
The campground features 15 thoughtfully spaced sites, ensuring privacy while enjoying the great outdoors. Each site offers manual pump water, and there are two vault toilets available for guest use. The proximity to Rock Creek adds a special touch, allowing visitors to easily access the river for swimming, fishing, or simply enjoying the scenic views.
Bitterroot Flat Campground is conveniently located just an hour and a half from Missoula, making it an excellent choice for those looking to escape the city after work. The journey to the campground involves 10 miles of paved road followed by 7-8 miles of dirt road, which is well-maintained and wide enough for trailers. However, visitors are advised to avoid approaching from the south via Skalkaho Highway due to its narrow and winding nature.
One of the standout features of this campground is its remote location, with no cell service available in the area. This provides a perfect opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature. The lack of camp hosts means visitors should rely on self-sufficiency, though USFS personnel frequently patrol the grounds for any issues.
Customers have praised Bitterroot Flat Campground for its clean facilities, well-kept grounds, and peaceful atmosphere. Many highlight the privacy provided by the surrounding foliage, especially at site number one near the entrance. However, some guests note that while the sites closer to the road may experience minor road dust, the central sites offer more distance from the road.
While fly fishing enthusiasts will find success in Rock Creek, traditional anglers should be aware that the water is shallow and hooks can be lost easily. The campground's location makes it a great starting point for exploring nearby trails and points of interest.
- Clean Facilities: Vault toilets are well-maintained and kept clean throughout the day.
- Privacy: Well-spaced sites with foliage providing natural screening between neighbors.
Bitterroot Flat Campground is a hidden gem for those seeking an authentic outdoor experience without the distractions of modern technology. Whether you're planning a family trip, a romantic getaway, or a solo adventure, this campground offers the perfect blend of nature and comfort.

Customer Reviews
Fifteen sites, well spaced, two vault toilets, manual pump water available. Easy access to the river. No camp hosts, but USFS people stopped by several times a day while we were there. The toilets were very clean, and the campground itself was very well kept up. We stayed at site number one, right on the edge of the campground, near the entrance, and we loved that site. Lots of foliage between us and the next site, so we felt like we had a reasonable amount of privacy while we were there. A little road dust when two or three vehicles would pass at the same time, but not bad at all. Sites in the center of the campground are much further away from the road. Approaching from the north, from I-90, there is about ten miles of pavement, then seven or eight miles of dirt road. The road is in good shape, reasonably wide, with lots of pullouts for people pulling trailers. We pulled our teardrop trailer, and passed lots of people pulling trailers with no problems. If you’re pulling a trailer, particularly a camper of any kind, DO NOT attempt to reach this campground from the south, from the Skalkaho highway. That road is extremely narrow for about five miles, with no pullouts available. No cell service at all, for miles in either direction, which I think is a good thing. It’s about an hour and a half from Missoula, great for getting out of town after work on a Friday.
We ended up here after wandering from Phillipsburg up Rock Creek Road. All campgrounds were full and we ended up driving for a long time until we reached Bitterroot Flat. Rock Creek is hard to access from the campsites and there is not much privacy. A neighboring campsite was shining a bright flashlight on our tent until dark. Just as a warning, do not come here for fishing unless you are fly fishing. The water is really shallow and we lost around four hooks to the creek until we gave up.
One of the best places you'll ever camp the scenic views are incredible the sound of the creek will put you to sleep
Loved it. road is a challenge
Nice campground. Only drawback is they want you to pay $6 a night.
