Black Beach Municipal Campground Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For Minnesotans exploring the legendary North Shore of Lake Superior, finding a modern, well-equipped, and centrally located campground is a prize. Black Beach Municipal Campground in Silver Bay, MN, is precisely that destination. Opened recently, this campground represents one of the newest and most desirable basecamps along the scenic Highway 61 corridor. It is comprised of 49 spacious sites situated on 14.5 acres, offering a range of options from electric-only to coveted full hookup sites designed to accommodate modern RVs and trailers.

The true star of the show, and the campground’s namesake, is the stunning Black Beach Park, located just a short walk away. This unique Lake Superior shoreline, with its sparkling black sand (a remnant of taconite tailings which are completely harmless), offers incredible geological beauty and is a popular spot for photos, picnics, and even searching for Lake Superior agates. As confirmed by local users, the campground excels as a perfect launchpad, allowing you to "park your camper and then take trips to many attractions that are close to Silver Bay, for example Gooseberry Falls and Two Harbors." This central location, combined with the campground’s commitment to cleanliness and upkeep—including clean shower rooms and well-maintained grounds—makes it a highly attractive destination for anyone looking to maximize their North Shore adventure time. While the young saplings mean shade is limited in some newer sections, the convenience and quality of the facilities more than compensate for the open-sky environment.

Location and Accessibility

Black Beach Municipal Campground is strategically positioned in the heart of the North Shore, making it an incredibly convenient stop for travelers coming from Duluth, the Twin Cities, or the Iron Range. The address is 200 W Lakeview Dr, Silver Bay, MN 55614, USA.

Its location is a major selling point, situated just off of Highway 61—the main artery of the North Shore Scenic Byway—and adjacent to the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway. This intersection of key travel routes means the campground is perfectly central for daily excursions. It’s only about an hour’s drive north of Duluth and roughly 50 miles south of Grand Marais. Silver Bay itself offers essential amenities, including a small grocery store, fuel, and restaurants. Access into the campground is straightforward, featuring level, easily navigable gravel sites, including several pull-through spots specifically designed to accommodate long RVs and trailers up to 75 feet in length—a rare and valuable feature on the North Shore. For non-RV users, the campground also connects directly to the Gitchi-Gami Bike Trail and the Superior Hiking Trail, making it ideal for those arriving by bike or on foot.

Services Offered

As a municipal campground, Black Beach offers a high level of development and amenity, far surpassing the primitive nature of many state park or National Forest camps in the area. These services are geared toward comfort and convenience, especially for RV travelers.

  • Campsites: A total of 49 sites are available for reservation.
  • Full Hookup Sites: 34 sites feature full hookups, including 20/30/50 amp electric service, water, and sewer connections—a premium service on the North Shore.
  • Electric Only Sites: 15 sites offer 20/30 amp electric service only (no water/sewer), suitable for smaller RVs or tents.
  • Restrooms & Showers: Modern, well-maintained, and frequently cleaned restrooms and shower rooms. These facilities are often praised in reviews for their cleanliness and ease of use, with some now featuring secure, code-locked access for registered guests.
  • Connectivity: Free WiFi access is provided throughout the campground, a significant convenience in a traditionally remote region.
  • Camp Furnishings: Each site includes a fire ring with a grill grate and a sturdy picnic table.
  • Recreation: A dedicated playground area is available for children, and the camp provides direct access to the ATV trail system, including an ATV washing station.
  • Water Services: A potable water station is on-site. NOTE: There is no dump station on the property for those not booked into a full hookup site; off-site city facilities in Silver Bay must be used.
  • Pet Policy: The campground is pet-friendly, though dogs must be kept on a leash.

Features / Highlights

The primary appeal of Black Beach Municipal Campground is its unique combination of natural wonder and practical accessibility to the best of the North Shore.

  • Black Beach Access: The main highlight is the walking distance access to the stunning, one-of-a-kind Black Beach on Lake Superior. This dark, pebble-filled beach provides fantastic opportunities for lakeside relaxation, photography, and the quintessential Minnesota pastime of hunting for Lake Superior agates and unique colored stones.
  • Central Hub for State Parks: The location is unmatched for convenience. The campground is centrally positioned near four major North Shore State Parks: Tettegouche, Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, and George H. Crosby Manitou State Park. This allows campers to hit multiple attractions within a single, short day trip.
  • Direct Trail Connectivity: The site offers direct trail access to the Gitchi-Gami State Trail (paved bike trail) and the extensive local and state OHV/ATV trail systems, making it a paradise for motorized and non-motorized trail users alike. Enthusiasts can ride directly from their campsite.
  • Big Rig Friendly Sites: The presence of pull-through sites and the ability to accommodate RV lengths up to 75 feet is a significant feature, providing ease of maneuvering and setup that is often hard to find at older North Shore campgrounds.
  • Nearby Amenities and Attractions: The campground is very close to the Silver Bay Marina (a designated safe harbor on the Lake Superior Water Trail), the Silver Bay Golf Course, and the new Black Beach Mini Golf, ensuring there are plenty of alternative activities for non-hiking days.

What is Worth Choosing

For Minnesota residents, choosing Black Beach Municipal Campground is the best way to secure a modern, fully-serviced command center for a comprehensive North Shore trip. It represents the best value for convenience and amenities in the area.

The number one reason to choose Black Beach is its strategic location and superior infrastructure. Unlike the older, more rustic campgrounds that dot the shoreline, Black Beach offers full 50-amp hookups and sewer connections on many sites, providing the ultimate comfort for RV travelers. This means no frantic search for dump stations and full power to run air conditioning on warm summer days—a true luxury on the North Shore.

The second major draw is the unbeatable access to key attractions. You are a short walk from the globally unique Black Beach, and yet the campground is perfectly situated between the towering cliffs of Palisade Head, the historic Split Rock Lighthouse, and the majestic waterfalls of Tettegouche and Gooseberry Falls. You can spend the morning searching for agates on the beach and the afternoon hiking a world-class trail, all from one central spot. The added bonus of direct ATV trail access ensures that all types of outdoor enthusiasts are catered to.

In short, Black Beach Municipal Campground is not just a place to park your RV; it’s the modern, amenity-rich anchor that puts the entire North Shore at your fingertips, making every day of your Minnesota adventure efficient, comfortable, and unforgettable.

The campground's location is awesome! You can park your camper and then take trips to many attractions that are close to Silver Bay, for example Gooseberry Falls and Two Harbors. While the campsites are not on the lakefront, it is just a short walk to get to Black Beach which is beautiful. Go hunting for agates! The campground is well-maintained, the shower rooms are clean and easy to use. We will be back!

Fairly quiet while we were there. Location is very convenient (close to a lot of attractions and amenities). Showers were clean and grounds were well kept. The greenhouse across the road squeeks every hour or two for about 30 seconds it kind of was annoying but not horrible

- too close to the highway -booked 5 camping spots together for family and none of us were together when we arrived -says their office closes at 330pm everyday and have shown up before that time and they are closed -they gave us a number to text to get firewood before 330pm so we messaged them a few hours before and never got it when we arrived and then they were closed. -they clearly don’t spray for bugs. I’ve camped up north several times and never had a worse experience with mosquitoes -no shade -can’t see Lake Superior unless you drive down to the beach

Nice, level full hook up sites, small park for the kiddos. Be aware that the camp sites on west lakeview rd. Are directly on the road leading to the Black sands Beach and is relatively high traffic. Lots of UTV/ATVs and diesel trucks. no sidewalk. However this campground is within a half hour drive of many hiking trails and scenic view points. Would definitely recommend a stay druing the week because the general area is much less crowded.

Nice campground! They have pretty nice shower houses, bathrooms, and spots to back in. They're right on some of the trails and also close to black Beach.
