Black Canyon Campground - Lower is a hidden gem nestled in the remote landscapes of Mimbres, New Mexico. Located near the proposed Wild and Scenic portion of the East Fork of the Gila River, this campground offers a pristine setting for outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure and tranquility. The area is particularly popular among hikers and anglers due to its rugged terrain and scenic beauty.
The campground provides a mix of modern convenience and rustic charm. While the facilities are simple, they are well-maintained, with clean bathrooms and hand sanitizer available. Picnic tables are provided at each site, though some may show signs of age. The area is surrounded by breathtaking canyon views, making it a perfect spot for those looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Guests have noted the campground's proximity to the Gila River, which offers excellent opportunities for fishing and hiking. The steep canyon walls make navigation predictable, adding a sense of safety for outdoor activities. However, visitors should be aware that some areas may require cleanup, with occasional debris and fallen limbs present.

Black Canyon is a drive to get to (must take 4-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle) but the bathroom was clean, with TP and hand sanitizer, and the picnic tables had seen some years but were servicable. Nice camping area with the hopefully soon to be designated Wild and Scenic portion of East Fork of the Gila River meandering through which makes good hiking because the steep canyon makes it nearly impossible to get lost. When you pass the BIG meadow with old fencing on your way to Black Canyon from Mimbres (Hwy 35), look for a historic homestead ruin on the same side as the meadow but just a bit down, if you hit the rectangular water trough located on the oppisite side of the meadow, you have gone passed the ruin.
Stopped here for lunch on our way to Snow Lake/Dipping Vat. For both the Upper and Lower campgrounds, there were a few pick-nick tables and a vault toilet at each site. Overall, not at bad place but needs some clean up work done on it. A lot of natural debris, fallen limbs and the like.
Great site
