Black Lake Campground Introduce
🌲 Introduction / Overview of Black Lake Campground
For Wisconsin residents seeking the quintessential Northwoods camping experience—one defined by calm waters, towering pines, and quiet seclusion—Black Lake Campground is a highly recommended destination. Located within the scenic Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, this facility is renowned as a family-favorite recreation area, offering an authentic, rustic escape on the shores of its namesake, the 129-acre Black Lake.
This is a rustic, non-electric campground that successfully balances basic necessities with incredible natural beauty. The facility features 29 designated campsites, many of which are beautifully situated right on the lake, offering immediate water access and stunning views. Visitors consistently praise the peaceful atmosphere and the excellent tree coverage that ensures privacy between sites. It’s the perfect setting for unplugging and immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of the Northwestern Wisconsin wilderness.
Black Lake Campground caters to both tent and RV camping (up to 45 feet in some sites) and utilizes a mixed reservation system, where a number of sites are reservable while others are held for spontaneous, first-come, first-served adventurers. The affordable fee structure ($15/night, or $7.50 with a qualifying discount pass) makes it an accessible option for many Wisconsin families.

The true draw of Black Lake Campground for Wisconsin outdoor enthusiasts lies in the lake itself and the comprehensive recreational features it offers.
- Abundant Lakefront Sites: A majority of the 29 sites are located directly on the lake, often within 50 feet of the shoreline. Each site typically has a small path leading down to the water, allowing campers to easily beach a canoe or kayak right by their site.

 - Black Lake Trail: The 4-mile Black Lake Trail circles the lake, starting near the campground entrance. This is an easy, leisurely interpretive hike that features information on the area’s logging history and Civilian Conservation Corps heritage. While some parts may be muddy or overgrown (as noted by a review), it is a vital feature for local hikers and a great place to walk with pets (which are allowed).

⭐ What is Worth Choosing at Black Lake Campground
For the Wisconsin family or angler seeking an affordable, non-electric, and genuinely lake-centered camping experience, Black Lake Campground is an excellent choice. It is worth choosing for two main reasons:
First, the high concentration of beautiful, private, lakefront sites is rare for a rustic National Forest facility. Having a picnic table and fire ring with a path leading directly to the water’s edge is the ideal setup for a Northwoods vacation.
Second, the campground offers a perfect balance of primitive camping and necessary convenience. You get the quiet, natural solitude of a non-electric site, yet you still have clean vault toilets, potable water, and trash disposal, making it manageable for both tent and smaller RV campers. Black Lake provides the complete package for a peaceful, water-based, family-friendly getaway in the heart of Wisconsin’s Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

Customer Reviews
Beautiful rustic campground. Had a very peaceful night here. Many of the sites are on the lake with lake access and there's good tree coverage between sites for privacy.
Beautiful campground with many campsites on the lake. Super quiet and peaceful. Each site has a little path to get onto the trail that goes around the lake and a path to get down to the water. Every site also has a fire pit. There’s one water pump on site that requires a little bit of force but works well. Bathrooms were clean and tidy. First come first served are mixed within the reservable sites. $15 per night or $7.50 with discount pass. The lake was gorgeous but the hiking path around it was very overgrown and muddy so I couldn’t really get too far.
Rented the handicap site number 1 thinking it would be close to the bathrooms, It was long walk and the host wasn't there so I could try to change sites. Real hard with a walker. Lake is nice and all camp sites looked clean, Bathrooms were clean. Wondering why the satellite radio did not work until about A mile down the road. Could make a phone call and text.
One of the best camping spots we’ve been to in a while. Had an awesome spot right on the water with space for the dogs to swim and a big, open site for us to set up and relax. Hosts were really kind as well. Only 45 minutes from Hayward too should you need to get back to reality (and cell service) at all.
Beautiful views! The only drawback was that site 15 and site 13 are back to back. There is nothing separating the sites. This is a waterfront site but there is no immediate access directly to the water, you need to walk past site 13 and down a little path. Well worth it! There is not much of a beach, maybe about a foot of sand and then there's the water. We did not try out the lakeside trail as we heard wolves right across the lake the night before and we have two very excitable dogs. Would I come back again? Yes! Reserve your site early.
