This is a beautiful area in the Sonora desert. It is very quiet and peaceful. Good cell phone reception. It has paved roads to its entrance. It has few big rig sites though. It is best suited for vans and campers. That said there was still some big rigs here. There are probably a dozen sites that could accommodate a big rig. We have a 28’ trailer and found a spot near the entrance. There is an old cow corral at the entrance. A local told us it is no longer used as there are no free range cows in the area. The corral is flat, huge and would be perfect for several big rigs to camp in. Very close to I-10 also.
I can't say much about the BLM camp other than regardless of its condition. We are blessed to have places to camp for free. I drove in, but It seemed to be full, and i prefer to camp away from others. However .. the entire area is BLM and there are dozens of private pull off spots on the same road and adjacent roads. I found a gorgeous site with a fire ring about 1/4 miles up the road, which was absolutely awesome. 5 stars for this BLM dispersed camping area
Could this area be from a foreign planet? This camp spot has NO amenities. The sign on the way in reads ‘no dumping’. The road into the campground is narrow. Big rigs should grab one of the first spots. The further back the spots get smaller. Great sunsets. Low light pollution yields great star views. Several types of cacti here. Like a dense forest. The cholla are the ones to steer clear of. Nasty hooked spines! This is BLM land. As such, there is an active target practice range to the West. If that puts you on edge, best to go elsewhere.
We had a wedding here over the weekend and it was beautiful. There were several spaces for our group close by but yet allowed some space for privacy. It looked like a few more spots were open beyond ours and the weekend was predicted to be beautiful, and it was! So there were plenty of people there. The road in made me a bit nervous in my little Toyota Motorhome but it was doable with slower speeds. There were bigger units out there I'm just not real experienced in the beauty of true boondocking. Remember to carry a fork with you, it will make removing those pesky Cholla easier and needle nose pliers to remove the leftover needles, seriously. Also watch your dogs/pets as those Cholla will snag them in a blink and then they will try to pull it out and now have it in their mouths. Yep had that happen this weekend so pet friendly is yes and no, because the outdoors bites back,😅. There are ZERO amenities so be prepared and please pack out your trash and leave your spot cleaner than when you arrived, because these are beautiful grounds to camp.
The intensely spiney cholla, jumping cholla, depositing their segments at will, will get you. I swept my site, set up the side shelter, only to find more had fallen off in the vicinity. One got my foot, and they are hard to pull out and hurt like the dickens. This is not a place for sandals. Maybe I should wear my ski goggles to protect my eyes. (seriously) My lizard friends came to visit and I scouted some tarantula holes. However, I love all the cactus and will slip on the heavy duty hiking shoes tomorrow (and all the time) and take a look see. There are several people scattered about and not really sure how far the lane into the area goes. There is enough solitude for everyone. But, I do hear someone singing. 👂
I added this photo I took about an hrs ago. You will need to zoom in a little (obviously, I'm not a professional photographer) to see the moon coming up over the top of the hill. What can I say it's free camping, and it is hot, very hot, so make sure to bring plenty of fluids. As far as a specific playground, there isn't one that is unless you count pretty much the entire place you can take in some short hikes, bicycles, or motorcycle rides, pretty much whatever atv you want to bring. Just so I don't mislead anyone you'll have plenty of room ride but you're only talking about a square mile so if you like to go on long rides like I do then you might want to go somewhere else, but I think it's a great place to teach the kids or beginners so they can get used to riding around people. Apparently, I'm a little long-winded this evening, so let me get back on track here. As far as some of the other questions, this is about as basic as it gets no bathrooms, showers, running water trash pickup. Now, for the good news, there is a little market about a mile and a half away that sells ice, water, and most of the basics. The people are either friendly and helpful or stay to themselves. Now for the catch, unfortunately, like most places you do sometimes have to watch out for the people who like to steal things if given the opportunity. I hope that this gives everyone enough information to make a (Hopefully)more informed decision. And remember, we all benefit from working and helping each other far more than we would alone. To all of you out there, be safe.
