Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
☀️ Introduction / Overview
The BLM Pilot Knob Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA) in Winterhaven, California, is a premier destination for RV enthusiasts, full-time travelers, and "snowbirds" seeking to escape colder climates and embrace the warm, dry air of the Southern California desert. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), this expansive area is specifically designated for extended stays, allowing visitors to set up camp for up to seven months during the official fee season, which typically runs from September 15th to April 15th.
Unlike traditional campgrounds with defined sites and full hookups, Pilot Knob LTVA offers a primitive, dispersed camping experience over a vast area. This setup is perfectly suited for modern, self-contained RV units, providing ample space to spread out, enjoy the quiet, and immerse oneself in the unique desert environment. Visitors appreciate the freedom of dry camping (boondocking) with the added benefit of on-site services that support long-term stays, making it a highly cost-effective and community-focused alternative to private RV resorts in the area. The site’s location near the California-Arizona border and the US-Mexico border crossing makes it an incredibly convenient base camp for regional exploration.
🗺️ Location and Accessibility
The BLM Pilot Knob LTVA is strategically located at 601 Sidewinder Rd N, Winterhaven, CA 92283, USA. This address places it in Imperial County, right in the heart of the desert borderlands. Its accessibility is a major selling point for travelers:
The terrain is generally flat and open, making it easy for even the largest "big-rig" RVs to navigate the established dirt and gravel roads and find a suitable, spacious dry camping spot.
⛽ Services Offered
The Pilot Knob LTVA is a designated primitive camping area, meaning services are intentionally limited to maintain the open desert experience. This environment requires campers to be largely self-contained. However, the BLM provides crucial support services for extended stays:

👍 What is Worth Choosing
The BLM Pilot Knob Long Term Visitor Area is the ideal choice for a specific type of California traveler: the self-contained RV owner or 'boondocker' seeking a warm, long-term winter escape.
It is worth choosing for several compelling reasons:
For the budget-conscious long-term traveler, the LTVA offers unparalleled value. The permit system allows you to stay in the warmth of the desert for the entire winter season (up to seven months) at a fraction of the cost of a private RV park. Furthermore, the combination of wide-open, big-rig-friendly space and the convenience of nearby essential services—dumpsters on-site, and nearby dump and water access—creates a perfect balance of primitive freedom and manageable living.
Moreover, the proximity to Los Algodones, Mexico, is an undeniable advantage for those seeking easy access to affordable medical, dental, and optical care just across the border. When you combine this practical convenience with direct access to local desert recreation, including the historic Pilot Knob and nearby OHV trails, the BLM Pilot Knob LTVA stands out as the ultimate winter destination for the independent, adventurous RV community in California.

Great place. Dry camping with lots of room, and easy to get around. You have to purchase 2 weeks at a min for $40. Dumpsters are on site. There is a gas station near by that has a dump station, $15. We hiked the pilot knob, steep walk but totally worth it! Overall great place.
Great place to stop for the night. Not a lot to see or do around here if you were just out RVing, but if you have sand vehicles. It looks like there are some fun trails around.
Only included service is trash, but this is a secure longer term option in the southern Cali desert. Dump, non-potable water and propane are available at the nearby Chevron. Potable city water is available and free at a nearby rest area on I-8. This spot has excellent big rig access with ample room to spread, comfortable but clearly not isolated. Pilot Knob is a set of small mountains that are a hoot to climb with your dog, and not just to the two main peaks. Mexico is visible from most points on the Knob, this is a pretty area where the Colorado River exits the US. 3 bars both ATT and Verizon, both LTE. Yuma is a short 6 miles away. BLM LTVA pass needed here but good with several other Ca/Az LTVA’s, including Midland - Holtville - Imperial Dam - La Posa and others.
BLM land. Large lot in the desert. No water trash containers only. Safe some train noise. 1.8 miles to border crossing.
We love Pilot Knob. We’ve stayed here off and on since the 1990s. It’s a lot less crowded than Imperial or Quartzsite and has easy proximity to Yuma.
