BLM Sacred White Shell Mountain Introduce
BLM Sacred White Shell Mountain offers a unique and remote camping experience for outdoor enthusiasts seeking an authentic connection with nature. Located in Mosca, Colorado (CO 81146), this primitive campground provides a chance to "rough it" while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. The site is ideal for those looking to escape modern amenities and immerse themselves in the beauty of unspoiled nature.
While there are no designated campsites, visitors can park their vehicles in areas that have already been used for camping. This flexible approach allows campers to choose spots that suit their needs best. The absence of facilities like toilets or restrooms means that guests must practice "pack it in, pack it out" principles, including bringing their own toilet paper and other essentials. RVs and tents are welcome at this primitive site.
One of the standout features of BLM Sacred White Shell Mountain is its stunning natural beauty. The area offers expansive views that make the camping experience feel truly special. However, campers should be prepared for strong winds, as the site is known for its windy conditions, especially in certain seasons. There are no trees to provide shade, so it's essential to bring sun protection and prepare for the elements.
Visitors have praised the campground for its affordability—access is free—but they also highlight that this comes with a trade-off in amenities. Many campers appreciate the opportunity to experience true dry camping (boondocking) while enjoying the freedom of exploring an undeveloped area. The site's remote location and lack of services make it ideal for those looking to disconnect from modern conveniences.
For visitors planning to stay, it's important to note that this is a 2WD accessible site. While most areas are manageable with standard vehicles, extreme weather conditions or off-season visits may require more robust equipment. Additionally, campers should be aware of the area's unique environmental conditions and wildlife, which can add to the camping experience but also necessitate responsible tourism practices.
- Environment: BLM Sacred White Shell Mountain is a remote and undeveloped area offering expansive views and a true backcountry feel. The landscape provides ample opportunities for exploration and photography.
- Service Items: No amenities are provided at the site, making it necessary for campers to bring all their own supplies, including water, food, and waste disposal bags.
- Characteristics: Primitive camping with no designated campsites. Visitors can park in existing spots and enjoy the freedom of exploring an undeveloped area. Strong winds are common, so be prepared with appropriate gear.
- Promotional Information: While there is no charge to camp here, visitors should remember that this is a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) site and adhere to all regulations and guidelines for responsible use.
Customer feedback highlights the unique aspects of camping at BLM Sacred White Shell Mountain. Many appreciate the affordability and freedom of camping in an undeveloped area, even though it requires preparation and self-reliance. One visitor noted, "This is a FREE camping spot on BLM land. Free is good, but please note there are no amenities here. This is what you call dry camping, boondocking, roughin' it." Another camper shared their experience: "Slept here for one night. Free BLM campsites. Some of them has fire rings! 2WD. Verizon 3 bars. No toilets or restrooms. There are many campsites here."
Overall, BLM Sacred White Shell Mountain is a great option for those looking to experience the beauty of Colorado's backcountry without the crowds and modern conveniences. While it requires preparation and adaptability, the rewards of camping in such a pristine environment make it a worthwhile destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

This is a FREE camping spot on BLM land. Free is good, but please note there are no amenities here. This is what you call dry camping, boondocking, roughin' it. There are no designated campsites. Park where you fit in, preferably in a spot that's already been camped on. Pack in what you pack out, including your toilet paper. And beware, winds can be STRONG. I camped in mid September and it was way windy. There are no trees either, so no shade. But it's free to camp, and the view is beautiful.
Slept here for one night. Free BLM campsites. Some of them has fire rings! 2WD. Verizon 3 bars. No toilets or restrooms. There are many campsites here.
Extremely windy here when I went over Memorial Day . Best for car camping not with an actual tent over 30 mph winds at night. Great because close to the entrance of the sand dunes and free camping. Good amount of spots but not much tree coverage. Higher you go higher car clearance you’ll need
100% dry camping. We parked just off the highway in the marked lot. Many more locations spots scattered between this site and the mountain. Popular place for 4wheeling. Located about 10 miles from the Great Sand Dunes National Park.
Great FREE BLM Camping 20 minutes outside Great Sand Dunes NP. This is one of my go-to stops when traveling through the area. Quiet, easily accessible for ANY size rig from car to class A motor home. No services, Pack it in- pack it out. No water no bathrooms.
