For South Dakotans who appreciate practical, no-fuss camping with the convenience of full hookups, Boondocks Campground in New Underwood offers an ideal solution. This isn't a sprawling resort with endless amenities, but rather a straightforward, clean, and highly functional RV park designed for those who value essential services and easy access. If you're traveling through the region, need a comfortable overnight stay, or are looking for a reliable base camp close to some of South Dakota's most iconic attractions, Boondocks Campground provides a refreshing and welcoming stop right here in our state.
The concept of a "campground" at Boondocks is geared towards the self-sufficient RV traveler. It’s described by customers as "a small parking lot," but one that's "Full Hookup" and "Big Rig friendly," emphasizing its core utility. The owners are transparent about what to expect, clearly stating that there are "NO amenities" like bathrooms or a pool on site. This honesty sets appropriate expectations and caters to a specific type of camper: those who are largely self-contained within their RVs and prioritize the hookups and a level spot over extensive communal facilities. For South Dakota locals, this means a reliable and uncomplicated option when you need a place to plug in, refill, and dump, without the added cost or distraction of features you might not use.
Boondocks Campground operates on a convenient honor system for cash payments, reflecting its laid-back and trusting atmosphere. Reviews highlight the quiet environment, which is a major plus for anyone seeking a peaceful night's rest after a day of travel or exploration. The focus on providing clean, essential services like 20/30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, combined with its easy accessibility from the highway and proximity to local conveniences, makes it a pragmatic and appealing choice for South Dakotans. It truly serves as a practical and comfortable stopping point on your journey through our beautiful state.
Boondocks Campground boasts an excellent and highly convenient location for South Dakota travelers, situated at 22762 161st Ave, New Underwood, SD 57761, USA. New Underwood is a small community in Pennington County, strategically positioned just off Interstate 90. This makes the campground incredibly accessible for those traversing the state, offering "Super easy on and off the highway."
Its proximity to major regional hubs is another significant advantage. The campground is located "just 15 minutes from Rapid City," which is a major city in western South Dakota and often serves as a gateway to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, and other iconic attractions. This allows campers to enjoy a quieter, more affordable stay while still being within easy reach of urban amenities and tourist destinations. The town of New Underwood itself, while small, offers surprising conveniences within "half a mile/walking distance" of the campground. These include "a good restaurant for breakfast and lunch" and "a store that houses a laundry mat, pizza shop, grocery store and liquor with a nice selection of everything." - Full Hook-up Sites: The primary service is providing full hook-up sites, which include "20/30/50 hookup, sewer and water." This means campers have direct access to electricity, potable water, and a sewer connection at their individual site, eliminating the need to move their RV for waste disposal.
- Big Rig Friendly: The campground is explicitly "Big Rig friendly," with reviews noting that "triple tows come in and camp overnight without any issues at all." This ensures ample space and maneuverability for larger recreational vehicles.
- Dump Station: A dump station is available on-site, providing a convenient facility for emptying black and grey water tanks.
- Potable Water Access: Water is available at each site, though one reviewer noted the "Water does not taste good," suggesting campers might prefer to bring their own drinking water or a filter for taste.
- Honor Box Payment System: Payment is typically made via an "Honor box for payment. $30 cash." This provides a flexible and unsupervised check-in process for arriving campers. Credit card payments are also possible by calling the provided phone number.
- On-Site Firewood (Unconfirmed): While not directly mentioned in all reviews for Boondocks specifically, some campgrounds in the broader area utilize an honor system for firewood, so it's worth inquiring if available. (Note: The provided review mentions this for a different campground, so direct confirmation for Boondocks is needed if this is a critical amenity for the user.)
It is important to reiterate, as stated in reviews and by the owner, that there are "No bathrooms, pool or other items like it." Campers should be fully self-contained or prepared to rely on their own facilities or nearby public options.

Customer Reviews
NO amenities. It's a small parking lot. We really needed a shower. Our hot water heater is broken. But, there's 20/30/50 hookup, sewer and water. Water does not taste good. All in all, glad we stayed. No shade.. It's been hot and my fiancé and dogs needed A/C. Honor box for payment. $30 cash. Call for credit card. Would recommend for a night.
Full Hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp. Big Rig friendly and during our 11 day stay we saw a couple of triple tows come in and camp overnight without any issues at all. No bathrooms, pool or other items like it, but the owner is very clear when you are booking so you are clear about what to expect. Super easy on and off the highway and just 15 minutes from Rapid City. Also, the town has a good restaurant for breakfast and lunch along with a store that houses a laundry mat, pizza shop, grocery store and liquor with a nice selection of everything. All within half a mile/walking distance. Lastly, the owners are super nice and great to deal with. We will be back for sure.
Easy access off the interstate, full hookups for $30. They have a convenient overnight drop box for payment. We will be back!
Had a great stay here. Close to rapid city, and got to visit many parks. Owners were very nice.
We stayed here for 2 nights out of the 4 we had planned on because there was an unexpected hail storm and some people experienced major damage. Ours was minor, so we left as there was another one expected to come the following evening. If the hail storm hadn't happened, we would have stayed our entire length as even though it is a campground with no frills, it is clean, it is nestled in between beautiful green landscape for miles around you and is very quiet at night even though it is very close to a major hwy. I loved opening my door to see nothing, but open land across from the street of this campground. The sites are gravel, almost leveled with green space between each spot. We had 3 bars on our AT&T phones with on issues on taking/making calls and surfing our phones. The owner is a very kind and energetic lady, who gave us money back for the two nights that we decided to not stay and run without us even asking for it. It was mother nature and she had no control over it, so we didn't even think to ask. But it seemed like her thought process was...it was mother nature, we had no control over it and hence have to leave early. How thoughtful of her I must say!
