For Texans seeking a premier state park experience with excellent lake access, **Bright Star Campground** is a standout destination. Located within the **South Sulphur Unit of Cooper Lake State Park**, near Sulphur Springs, this campground offers a perfect blend of modern convenience and natural beauty on the shores of **Jim Chapman Lake**. We Texans know the value of a quality state park site, and Bright Star is celebrated for its well-maintained facilities and the serene, lakeside atmosphere it provides.
The campground is situated in the rolling countryside of Northeast Texas, making it a convenient escape from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex while still feeling miles away from the city bustle. The park itself is divided into two units—Doctors Creek and South Sulphur—and Bright Star belongs to the latter, known for its extensive camping facilities and direct access to the lake. The campground is particularly popular for RV and trailer owners, featuring over **40 sites** that offer essential utilities and ample personal space. Visitors consistently rave about the abundance of local wildlife, with **"DEER EVERYWHERE!!!"** being a common and exciting highlight, alongside armadillos, raccoons, and a variety of birds. **Location and Accessibility: Northeast Texas Lakeside Gem**
Bright Star Campground is an easily identifiable loop within the **Cooper Lake State Park South Sulphur Unit**. The primary address associated with the area is **Bright Star Loop, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482, USA**. This places the campground on the southern side of Jim Chapman Lake, closer to the city of Sulphur Springs than the park's other unit. The location is ideal for Texas residents, as it’s accessible via a reasonable drive from major metropolitan areas, providing that sweet spot between convenience and deep relaxation.
Access to the sites is excellent. The campground features **paved roads** and **concrete or gravel-over-asphalt site pads** that are generally **level and clean**, accommodating RVs of various lengths. The State Park operates **without a gate**, simplifying arrival and check-in procedures, especially for those arriving after hours, who simply register at the Park Headquarters the following morning. Despite being a popular destination—requiring reservations often booked up to five to six months in advance—the layout is designed for maximum privacy, with sites "spacious and well-positioned for providing personal space," according to guest feedback. The ease of access, combined with the quiet atmosphere, makes Bright Star a top-tier choice for a hassle-free Texas camping trip.

Very nice!!! All Rv spaces have a picnic table, grill area, gravel, water/electric, and easy access paths to walk to the water. Armadillos, rascal raccoons (trash pandas lol) bunnies, butterflies!!! Extra parking by camps. Some picnic tables have a Pavillion cover. Beaches are sandy and the water was great to swim in. There are designated areas for swimming, but we just went behind our camp. LOVED IT!!! DEER EVERYWHERE!!!!
Great state park sites! The site we stayed on was level and clean. We've been here several times now and have always had good luck with level sites. We didn't get to do the trails this time because we were too far from them and didn't bring a car or bikes. However, in the past we've enjoyed our walks on them.
A great camping loop with easy access to trails, water and bathhouse. The campsites are large, well organized and appointed with everything you could need for a fun camping trip.
The one downfall of the camping area is it there is no sewer only a dump station. It was a very nice campground.
Camping is cool. Nice lake for canoeing
