Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp Introduce

Welcome to Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp, a truly unique and immersive camping experience nestled within the expansive and beautiful L.L. Stub Stewart State Park in Oregon. As a distinct offering within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, Brooke Creek stands apart by providing a more primitive, yet incredibly rewarding, hike-in camping experience. It caters specifically to those who seek a deeper connection with nature, preferring the quiet solitude of a secluded forest setting over the more developed amenities of traditional RV parks. This camp is an ideal choice for backpackers, cyclists, and families eager to carry their gear a short distance to reach a tranquil and authentic outdoor retreat.

The environment at Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp is characterized by its enchanting forest setting. The camp is located within a grove of large, tall trees, providing a sense of being truly "a world away from the park's more developed areas." The surrounding L.L. Stub Stewart State Park boasts a lush landscape of mixed conifers and other native flora, creating a vibrant green canopy overhead. The air is typically fresh and clean, carrying the earthy scents of the forest floor. Being a hike-in camp, it is inherently quieter, with the sounds of nature – rustling leaves, distant bird calls, and perhaps the gentle murmur of Brooke Creek itself – providing a soothing backdrop. Wildlife is present, offering opportunities for observation of various bird species and smaller forest animals in their natural habitat. The sites are designed to be primitive, blending seamlessly into the natural surroundings, with a sense of privacy and seclusion. The short hike (approximately a quarter-mile from the Welcome Center parking lot) ensures accessibility while still providing that coveted feeling of being deep in the woods. The environment invites exploration and quiet contemplation, allowing visitors to truly disconnect and appreciate the serene beauty of the Pacific Northwest forest.

As a specialized offering within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp provides essential, basic services tailored for a primitive camping experience. The camp features 23 individual primitive campsites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and dining. While individual fire pits are not present at each site, the camp thoughtfully provides two common areas with fire rings, fostering a communal atmosphere for evening gatherings and campfires (when fire restrictions permit). Potable water is available nearby, accessible via two designated water spigots within the area, which is crucial for cooking and drinking. For restroom facilities, the camp offers two vault toilets, maintained for cleanliness. While these are basic, campers also have access to more developed facilities; flush toilets and hot showers are conveniently located approximately half a mile away in the Dairy Creek West loop of L.L. Stub Stewart State Park. This provides a balance, allowing for a primitive experience with the option of more modern comforts within a reasonable distance. Campers are advised that all tents must fit within an approximately 8x8 designated gravel tent pad, and metal tent stakes are recommended as plastic stakes may not work in the packed gravel. Carts are provided near the parking area to assist campers in transporting their equipment to the sites, alleviating some of the burden of a hike-in camp. The services prioritize simplicity and sustainability, encouraging a low-impact camping style.

Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp boasts several unique features that distinguish it from other camping options. Its primary feature is its "hike-in" nature, providing a more secluded and authentic wilderness feel compared to car-accessible campgrounds. This characteristic naturally filters out some of the typical campground noise, leading to a quieter and more peaceful experience. The designated common areas with fire rings are a notable feature, encouraging social interaction among campers while centralizing fire use for safety and environmental protection. The camp’s integration within L.L. Stub Stewart State Park offers unparalleled access to the park's extensive trail network, which includes over 30 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and even horseback riding (though horses are not permitted in the hike-in camp itself). The easy accessibility of flush toilets and hot showers within a short walk provides a significant advantage for a primitive camp, offering a hybrid camping experience. The camp is open year-round, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the forest in all four seasons, from vibrant summer days to peaceful winter snows. Its relatively close proximity to Portland (less than 35 miles northwest) makes it an accessible escape for urban dwellers seeking a quick yet meaningful immersion in nature. The peaceful seclusion, combined with the convenience of nearby amenities, positions Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp as an excellent choice for a restorative outdoor adventure.

For individuals or groups planning a visit to Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp, important promotional and booking information is readily available. Sites at Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp operate on a mixed system: sites #1–9 are available on a first-come, first-served basis, while sites #10–23 are reservable. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak seasons and weekends, and can be made up to six months in advance through the Oregon State Parks reservation website (oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com) or by calling 1-800-452-5687. While specific, time-limited promotional offers cannot be detailed here, standard camping rates apply, and information on these, along with any applicable day-use fees for parking at the Welcome Center, can be found on the official Oregon State Parks website. It is crucial to check for any current alerts or restrictions, such as fire bans (which are common during dry seasons and would impact the use of communal fire rings), trail closures, or other environmental advisories. The camp has a maximum occupancy of 6 people per site and allows for a maximum of one vehicle to be parked at the nearest parking area. Pet policies generally allow pets to be physically restrained at all times when not confined in a vehicle or tent, with leashes no longer than six feet, and all waste must be properly removed. Check-in time is typically 4:00 PM and check-out is by 1:00 PM. By consulting the official L.L. Stub Stewart State Park resources and ReserveAmerica, campers can ensure they have the most up-to-date information for a seamless and enjoyable stay at Brooke Creek Hike-in Camp, truly embracing its unique blend of primitive charm and accessible natural beauty within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category.

Good and clean campground. 1/4 mile from the parking lot, not steep. You even can take a cart to carry you bags. No bbq grills and bear boxes. Common fire-ring, bring your woods and a grille/skewer. Campsites close to each other. 2 simple no-flush toilets but a clean and fancy toilet in the visitor center (worked at 8:30pm).

Hike in campground. Each site has a picnic table and a small, usually gravel, area for a tent. Sites 9-13 are together in an open area around one of the shared fire rings. These sites would be good for camping with other groups. The other sites are more private. There are two shared fire rings. The one near sites 9-13 is near a water source. There are two restrooms with pit toilets. They were both reasonably clean. One was less odorous than the other. There are two water spigots that appear to have potable water. One cart was available at the trailhead. Signs say to return the cart immediately. The route in is a gravel road that gets steep as you approach the camp. The host at the Welcome Center said the camp rarely fills up. On a summer Thursday we saw only one campsite occupied. Several were reserved for the weekend. There are no bear lockers, so be prepared to protect your food from wildlife. There are no trash cans. Signs say to pack out your trash.

I stayed at the Brooke Creek hike-in spot with my dog. It was nice, clean, and mostly quiet. I kind of wish each site had a firepit instead of the communal pits. Also, they should describe the hike in to the campsite better. It is a gravel road with somewhat steep inclines and declines for about .25 miles that left me exhausted pulling my cart of gear in. If you don't take a cart, it's an easy hike. Lugging the cart up the incline leading in to camp was brutal and I saw a few other campers struggling as well!

The beat place at LL Stubb Stewart park. It’s Hike in only, and there are only two fire pits for the whole Brook Creek area to share so get cozy with your neighbors. Thank you BSA 855 for making the fire pits.
