Brown Springs Campground Introduce
Welcome to Brown Springs Campground, located on County Road 1980, Farmington, NM 87401. As a part of the 'Campgrounds & RV Parks' category, this campground offers a unique experience with significant differences between weekday and weekend stays.
During weekdays (Monday-Thursday), Brown Springs Campground is described as incredible. It features nine "private" sites equipped with gazebos, picnic tables, fire pits, and stoves. Clean pit toilets with toilet paper are provided. This section of the campground is free, but requires a permit obtained from the BLM website or office. The environment is peaceful, beautiful, and welcoming, with excellent internet connectivity (T-Mobile 5G).
However, the weekend experience is drastically different. By mid-afternoon on Friday, the campground becomes extremely crowded with locals, resulting in significant noise from dirt bikes and Razors that continue until late at night. There is little to no peace and quiet, and the facilities are often left messy with trash. The weekend atmosphere is described as "torture" by some visitors.
For tent campers and van people, particularly during winter months, this campground may not be ideal. The "dry tent sites" are expensive, lack amenities like picnic tables (which may need to be borrowed), and are located near a parking lot with bright lights and road noise. The advertised amenities, such as the hot tub and pool, are not available during winter. The "glamping" tents offer little privacy.
The access road to the campground can be tricky and requires high clearance vehicles, although some low clearance vehicles have managed. It is advisable to check the weather before visiting, as the dirt roads can become difficult in wet conditions.
Brown Springs Campground offers tranquil weekdays with private sites and free camping (with permit), but chaotic weekends with noise and crowds. It is ideal for self-sufficient campers who can plan their stay during the weekdays. Be aware of seasonal amenities and road conditions.
For inquiries or to obtain a permit, contact the BLM office. Visitors are urged to pack out all trash and respect the natural environment.
Customers highlight the peaceful weekdays and excellent internet, but strongly warn against visiting on weekends due to noise and crowds. Tent campers should be aware of limited winter amenities and higher prices.

Ok, first off. I came here in February and nothing, I repeat. Nothing, looks like it does the rest of the year. On top of that, the "amenities" that you are paying for with their high prices are not even available during the winter. No hot tub. No pool, (understandably of course). This review is basically only about their tent spots and their fees for them. I do not recommend this place for tent campers nor for van people. Especially during the winter months. I reserved a dry tent site for $50 after taxes. It had no picnic table so I had to steal the one from the very close by neighbor campsite because there is nothing between sites. I tried the faucet and realized why the website said dry. The restrooms and showers were well kept and very clean as others have said. I'll give them that. They have a laundry room, but 75% of the machines were not working. The basic tent campsites are next to a parking lot with very bright lights as well as by the road where you hear every vehicle. They have "glamping tent" spots that are nothing to brag about with no privacy between the adjacent lots. They need to charge a lot less for the tent spots. Both the "glamping" and the $40 basic. Especially during the winter months!! They don't even have a veteran's discount at this location. I should have just slept in my van by the side of the road and paid $10 for a shower here. Only good part is that I found a great Italian deli in town that made this stop worth it.
This place has been incredible! ON THE WEEK DAYS! There are nine “private” sites that include gazebo, picnic table, fire pit, and the stove. Very clean pit toilets, toilet paper is included! this campsite is free! Although, a permit is required - 14 day stay limit. You can find the permit on their website. Check it out on Google. I’ve noticed some campers have printed the permit and left it on the windshield, I personally emailed mine to the BLM office. Contact them for email information. It’s been very quiet [monday - thuraday] beautiful, and welcoming. I do plan on staying the full two weeks. On the weekends, it’s absolute torture! I would be long gone if I didn’t have a ton of work to do. By mid afternoon on Friday, at least 50 to 75 locals have plowed their way into the campsite. Endless dirt bikes and Razors consistently! ITS SO LOUD! No peace at all! It sucks. If you are coming on the weekend, prepared to fight over a spot, and I have very little peace and quiet. Like zero peace and quiet. The dirt bikes did not stop until 3 AM Friday morning. And they are still going! Zero respect for anyone, dirt everywhere. It’s torture, to be honest. They leave trash places and the bathroom a mess. It’s a totally different place on the weekend. And I dislike it very much. I work remotely, and the Internet has been incredible! Full bars, 5G, T-Mobile. The road in can be a bit tricky, I do recommend high clearance, although I have seen some low clearance vehicles enter over the last few days. Just take it slow, it’s definitely worth the drive! Also, check the weather before entering. The roads that lead you here are all dirt. I would not come if there is has been or will be rain during your stay. Town is just a short drive and has it all- including all shopping, gas, vet, and showers you may need! Please take all of your trash with you! This is a beautiful campsite, and it’s free! Please be respectful!
BLM land campground so it's free! Just make sure to print out the form on the website to leave in your car if you leave it at a site to go on a hike or whatever. Very well maintained campsites with sheltered picnic tables. No water access but the bathrooms are nice regardless. Gorgeous views!
Camp site was great, but directions to get there are wrong. About a minute before it says you’ll arrive, there’s a fork in the road, and you have to go right instead of left. After that, keep left at the next fork, continue past the first parking lot, and the campground is right there. I went in mid February, and although there was snow, the main access road was well packed down. Only downside to the site itself was highway noise most of the night (not too loud, but definitely noticeable).
A must stop free first come first serve campground. Small, 9 areas in all to pull into. Great for tents and rvs, this area is gorgeously put together using quaint stone lined pathways to the one bathroom to service the area and 2 horseshoe areas located in the center of the grounds. There is a second bathroom within walking distance, but it is quite a distance in comparison to the centrally located one. Pulled in close to midnight with plenty of spots available, I woke up at 6 am with just one person here besides us! Great place for a family with smaller kids as it is well fenced in for each picnic area that comes with your spot. If you're headed for ute camping grounds and can't make it, this is your stop! Most importantly, there is one handicap camping spot available for use, which is not often easy to find while camping. +10 points to Gryffindor.
