Discovering the Bruning Dam Recreation Area: A True Nebraska Escape
For Nebraskans seeking a genuine outdoor experience away from the bustling crowds, the Bruning Dam Recreation Area offers a quiet, nature-focused escape in the heart of Fillmore County. Managed by the Little Blue Natural Resources District (NRD), this beautiful location is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s a vital area for conservation, flood control, and wildlife habitat, all while providing a range of beloved recreational activities for the local community and visitors alike.
Covering approximately 250 acres of surface water and 123 acres of public land, Bruning Dam is a hidden gem that embodies the rugged, natural beauty of the region. It’s an ideal spot for those who appreciate a more rustic and less commercialized outdoor environment. Whether you are an avid angler, a dedicated hunter, or simply someone looking for a tranquil spot to enjoy a picnic, this recreation area provides a peaceful backdrop for your next adventure. The dam’s primary functions, which include flood control and groundwater recharge, directly enhance the quality of the natural setting, making it a valuable resource for the entire area.
The emphasis here is on connecting with nature. The relatively untouched atmosphere ensures that you get a true taste of the Nebraska wilderness. While the facilities are functional and meet the needs of visitors, the area maintains a deliberately low-key profile, allowing the natural environment to take center stage. It's a place where the sound of the wind through the trees and the quiet ripple of the water on the dam's surface replace the noise of city life.
Location and Accessibility
The Bruning Dam Recreation Area is conveniently located in rural Fillmore County, making it a relatively easy drive from many central and eastern Nebraska communities. The location provides both seclusion and accessibility, perfect for a weekend trip or even a long day visit.
The official address places the area just outside the small community of Bruning, Nebraska. Specifically, you can find the entrance at the intersection of Corner Road AA and Road 18. This rural setting means that visitors should plan their travel and fuel stops accordingly, though the nearby town of Bruning, situated on Highway 81, offers essential services like gas, food, and medical care. The site is a short drive—approximately two miles east, one mile north, and three-quarters of a mile east—from Bruning itself, following well-marked county roads.
Navigating to the campground and recreational facilities is straightforward, though drivers should remember they are traveling on country roads, which may vary in condition depending on the season. The rustic nature of the area is part of its charm, so prepare for a true outdoor setting upon arrival. For those with boats, a designated boat ramp is available, ensuring easy water access.
Services Offered

Good for kids

The fish are all full of worms. Good place for those who just catch and release though.
Overall decent fishing which was completely unexpected. Caught quite a few channel cats a few small ones and a couple larger ones. I wouldn’t camp there though as there is only one designated spot and it’s next to the boat ramp there is no shade anywhere close
Me and friends decided to go fishing here and it was horible. At all the nrds ive been too this was the worst who ever has been doing the upkeep on it has been failing epicly in my opinion
Gambler 500 visit to the dam
Nice little channel cat
