I stumbled upon Bubba J’s while heading south from Chicago, needing a place to stay for the night. Sitting at a generic restaurant, I looked up spots and saw Bubba J’s pop up repeatedly with decent enough reviews and nearby restaurant. I decided to take a chance—and I’m so glad I did. The location is just a 15(ish) minutes from the interstate, assuming you're not an idiot like myself and miss a turn or two. The restaurant was full of locals, and they were some of the friendliest folks you’ll meet. I asked for a pizza, only to be told, “A) the kitchen is closed, and B) never mind—let me get you one right quick.” That kind of hospitality was something I'm used to in the South, but not in Illinois. As for the RV space itself, it was perfect. I can imagine it being a fantastic summer camping destination for locals, but for me, it worked just as well as an overnight stop hundreds of miles from home. I typically look for one-stop-only places, but Bubba J’s is officially on my “must-stop” list every time I head north. Thanks, Bubba J’s—you brought a big smile to a tired face that night.
This place is a good mix of rustic and comfortable. Great hook ups and water pressure, TONS of shade, bar next door with food and events, and about 15 mins drive from everything, while still being secluded. The camp host is really resourceful and friendly, I watched her hand craft a tool to help a guest with their slide out. It is rural, so expect bugs and wildlife at night.
My husband and I are traveling from Iowa to VA and needed a place to stop for the night. Lesson learned! Read the reviews before booking! It's not a bad campground, just very loud being next to a bar. Not an issue if you wanna party all night. Maybe this is why the owner didn't answer my call, just sent a text. No wifi and lights didn't work in either restroom. Needless to say, this won't be a place of return.
It is not a campground I would return to. I was looking for an overnight stop off the highway. Guess I didn't research well because it was off the highway but much further then I expected. We were traveling on I 57 north and it took a lot of winding roads to get there. Also part of the campground property is a bar/ restaurant which stays open until 2 a.m. it is a very popular bar with a lot of traffic in and out. When it closes for the evening some of the patrons can be very loud. We were there two nights and experienced this both nights. And these were weekday nights not a weekend.
We showed up July 8th. The campground was knee hi with grass and weeds. Trash over filling the dumpsters and falling on the ground. Next door was a bar and in back of the bar trash over filling there dumpsters and lots on the ground. When we got there our stop was filled. Even though the majority of spots were empty and not reserved. The only positive thing was the bathroom was clean and stocked. We will avoid this campground. PS in response of your post Sorry it was the 8th instead. Really doesn't matter. Would've been the same.
