Buffalo River State Park Campground Introduce
**Introduction / Overview: A Jewel of the Tallgrass Prairie**
For those of us in Minnesota who appreciate the vast, sweeping beauty of our state's natural heritage, the **Buffalo River State Park Campground** offers a unique and essential experience. Located in the Red River Valley, near Glyndon, this park is not defined by deep Northwoods lakes, but by the remarkable landscape of the **tallgrass prairie**, a vital ecosystem that once covered a third of Minnesota. The park itself serves as a crucial protected remnant of this prairie, offering visitors an unparalleled chance to hike, explore, and learn about a landscape that is both rare and historically significant.
The campground itself is nestled within a beautiful **hardwood forest** along the Buffalo River, providing a welcome pocket of shade and tranquility against the backdrop of the open prairie. It’s an ideal base camp for exploring the park’s diverse ecosystems, which also include a riverine gallery forest. With **44 drive-in sites**, including 35 with electric hookups, the campground caters primarily to RV and trailer campers, as well as tent campers seeking convenient amenities. We Minnesota State Park regulars appreciate the quality and maintenance provided, and this campground is frequently praised for its **spacious, level sites** and clean facilities. Whether you’re drawn by the desire to witness the dramatic spring boom of the Greater Prairie Chicken, hike along an ancient glacial ridge, or simply enjoy a quiet night under the stars, Buffalo River State Park provides a clean, well-maintained, and historically rich state park experience near the Fargo-Moorhead area.

**Location and Accessibility: Gateway to the Prairie**
Buffalo River State Park Campground is strategically located at **Glyndon, MN 56547, USA**. This places it in a highly accessible region of Western Minnesota, making it a convenient destination for residents of the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area, as well as those traveling along major US routes in the region. The park is situated just a short drive east of the main population centers, yet its over 4,658 acres provide an immediate sense of wilderness escape.
Accessibility by road is straightforward, minimizing the difficult final drives sometimes associated with remote northern destinations. The campground is designed for ease of use, even for larger rigs, with sites that are typically level and feature a gravel-over-asphalt base, as noted by appreciative campers. While the park is relatively close to a main highway and railroad tracks—which some may notice—it is generally described as quiet in the evenings. The location serves as an important hub for exploring the larger **tallgrass prairie complex**, which includes the adjacent Bluestem Prairie Scientific and Natural Area (SNA). This cooperative management provides miles of contiguous natural land for hiking and nature observation, solidifying its status as a premier destination for prairie lovers in Minnesota.

**What is Worth Choosing: The Prairie Experience and High Standards**
For Minnesota campers, choosing Buffalo River State Park is about embracing a unique landscape and relying on the high standards of our State Park system. It’s worth choosing for two main reasons. First, it offers **unparalleled access to the tallgrass prairie**, a distinct and beautiful ecosystem that provides a completely different experience than the forested lakes of Central and Northern Minnesota. The opportunity to hike miles of trails through a massive, protected prairie and observe its specialized wildlife is a significant draw for local naturalists and hikers.
Second, the campground consistently meets the needs of modern campers. Reviews repeatedly highlight the **cleanliness and high maintenance** of the facilities, noting "spacious and well-maintained" sites, level terrain, and the presence of **updated bathhouses** and a dish-washing station. These features ensure a comfortable stay, even when the campground is almost full. While the status of the swimming area may fluctuate, the reliable quality of the campsites, the availability of electric hookups, and the park's commitment to preserving the prairie make the Buffalo River State Park Campground a highly recommended, clean, and unique destination for any Minnesota resident looking to explore the state's wide-open western side.

Customer Reviews
Very nice campground with updated bathrooms and a place to wash dishes. The showers however need to be updated. They are in a different and very old building. The campground was almost full but was quiet in the evenings. Would be nice if they had the swimming area open again. Not any good places to get into the river.
Very close to Theodore Roosevelt NP. We got everything except the buffalo! Sentinel Butte is shown here. Close to Medora, where they have outdoor summer musical theater. Sites are spacious snd well-positioned for providing personal space. Clean, well-maintained. Sites are gravel over asphalt, level. Horses are allowed in some locations w/i the campground.
The campground is well shaded but looks incredible cramped. Most of the sights are right on top of each other with little to no privacy. I am giving it three stars because it does have a very nice new updated modern bathrooms/shower building. Plus it is very close to trails and the picnic area. The outer ring has the better camp sites including site 4,6,8,10,12,14.
Peaceful and quiet. Very clean campground.
Nice campground. Not too far from the I if traveling through. It was just an overnight stop for us, but sites were easy to get in and there were lots of trails. Showerhouse was clean and close to sites. I would like to come back and do trails.
