Buttermilk Campground offers a unique reservation system. While sites 27 through 46 in Loop B are reservable, a significant portion, approximately 60% of the total 56 sites (sites 1-26 and 47-56), are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. This increases the chances of finding a spot, even if the reserved sites appear fully booked on recreation.gov.
The campground boasts a great location right on the water. Loop A is entirely dedicated to first-come, first-served campsites, providing direct access to the lake. There are a few docks available on the lake for tying up boats, although it's noted that these docks are not adjusted for fluctuating water levels.
Recent upgrades have enhanced the camping experience at Buttermilk Campground. For the 2024 season, new vault toilets were installed, which visitors have found to be very clean. Additionally, each campsite now features new fire pits and a new utility table. Further improvements are planned, with new picnic tables expected to be introduced for the 2025 season.

Buttermilk loop B sites 27 through 46 are the reserved sites however a good 60% of the sites 1-56 are first come first serve. Vault toilets are very clean and camp hosts are the best. They are friendly and very helpful. Even if you see all the reserved sites are full on the recreation.gov web site, there is a 99% chance a first come first serve site will be available. Most of the sites are pull through.

Fun For All Ages! We had a family reunion here when our traditional campground was not available. What a wonderful surprise! Jet ski and boat rentals, wonderful restaurant and bar, outdoor seating, bounce houses and water islands, and great service!
Great campground right next to the lake and close enough to yellowstone. The campsites are nicely spaced and have enough room for a 26ft camper and long bed truck to menuver into a back in site. This is truly God's country. It makes me want to move to Idaho.
This is a Beautiful place to camp right on Island Park Reservoir. The fishing was Great, the camp host was NICE and it had the Cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen in a campground.
