BWCA Campsite #1604 Introduce
### š¶ Introduction / Overview
For Minnesotans seeking the quintessential, paddle-in wilderness experience, BWCA Campsite #1604 stands out as a true gem within the vast, million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Located on the legendary Basswood Lakeāone of the largest and most sought-after lakes in the BWCAāthis site offers a rare combination of large group capacity and luxurious amenities not often found in the deep wilderness: namely, a sizeable, soft, sandy beach. Campsite #1604 is consistently rated highly by those who have spent a night here, often being described as one of the best sites in its vicinity on Basswood Lake. It is a destination in itself, providing a comfortable, robust base camp for multi-day explorations. Visitors should note that all trips into the BWCAW require a mandatory permit, securing this specific campsite on Basswood Lake upon arrival is first-come, first-served.

The campsite is officially located within the BWCAW near Ely, MN 55731, USA, but its true identity is tied to the water. Campsite #1604 is situated on the shoreline of Basswood Lake, which straddles the U.S. and Canadian border, accessible from one of the major entry points near Ely. Basswood Lake is known for its massive size and complex network of bays, islands, and historical significance.
Accessibility is strictly by non-motorized means (canoe or kayak), as is the rule for much of the BWCAW. Reaching Campsite #1604 involves paddling and portaging from one of the western entry pointsāsuch as Entry Point #14 (Little Indian Sioux River North) or others that feed into Basswoodās interconnected water system, depending on the route chosen. Customer Reviews
Great site, loved the beach spot, makes for a super easy landing. Not the best view of the lake from the fire pit, but still an awesome site. We got lucky and didnāt have many bugs, lots of dragonflies on mosquito patrol
Large campsite. Plenty of room for hammocks or tents. Has a sandy beach which is unique. Swimming quality was poor compared to some spots, kind of murky and stagnant. Moskitos were decent, not too much wind but a little. Solid campsite overall
Big campsite with lots of space for a large group. The best landing is the sandy beach to the SW.
