Cabresto Lake is a gem in the mountains of Northern New Mexico near Red River. There are a few tent camping spots available on a first come, first served basis. There is a vault toilet available, but you should plan to bring water. The lake is 15 acres and it is one of the few places in New Mexico where you can catch brook trout. Fly fishing the lake is great fun. In the summer, I’ve had great luck on hopper patterns. Cabresto Lake is connected to Heart Lake by a 4 mile long trail. Those seeking a little more solitude may want to check out Heart Lake. The last 2 miles of road leading up to the lake can be described as primitive, at best. 4 wheel drive and high clearance are strongly advised.
The lake is beautiful. You definitely need a vehicle with 4WD or a side by side. It's a rocky, touch, curvy ride and the views are worth it. We took some lunch & had a picnic & we were very popular with the wildlife. 😂 We drove our F250 with no issues. Beautiful lake!
Beautiful location, just a little hard to get to. I recommend having a four wheel drive vehicle to go to this site.
Awesome hidden lake for a getaway. But you need a high lifted vehicle to get to it because it's road is not paved. And if you have 4x4 you'll have no issue
Beautiful alpine lake. The road in is extremely rough and not recommended for cars. There's a parking lot with a vault toilet and a hiking trail. Access to the lake is very steep but the water is so clear you can see the fish swimming about. Too bad some people don't pack out their trash.
