Camp McFender Introduce
Camp McFender, located in Appomattox, Virginia, is a distinctive offering within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, operating primarily as a private camping experience often facilitated through platforms like Hipcamp. Established in 2020, it was initially conceived to provide friends and guests with a relaxing outdoor escape, and this ethos of hospitality and personal connection remains central to its appeal. Unlike large, commercial RV resorts, Camp McFender emphasizes privacy, natural immersion, and a wealth of on-site and nearby recreational opportunities, making it a hidden gem for those seeking a more intimate and adventurous camping experience.
The environment at Camp McFender is its crowning glory. Spanning an expansive 64 to 91 acres (information varies, but consistently highlights a large landmass), the property features rolling hills, gorgeous views, and the presence of two distinct creeks: Bent Creek and a natural spring. This natural setting creates a serene and picturesque backdrop for camping. The sites themselves are lauded for their privacy, with 100% of recent Hipcampers affirming that the sites felt secluded, allowing for a truly tranquil experience away from the hustle and bustle. Sleeping to the sound of the rolling creek is often cited as a bonus by visitors.
The varied terrain of Camp McFender includes open fields, which offer excellent lookout points for enjoying sunrises and sunsets, and also provide exceptional dark sky viewing opportunities for stargazing and planet observation, thanks to minimal light pollution. Wooded areas provide shade and a sense of being truly immersed in nature. The presence of the creeks is a significant environmental feature, creating natural swimming holes and multiple rock beaches, perfect for cooling off on warm days. The overall impression is one of a thoughtfully managed natural landscape that provides both beauty and recreational utility.
Beyond its immediate boundaries, Camp McFender is conveniently located near several notable natural and historical attractions. It's approximately 13 miles from Holiday Lake State Park, 15 miles from James River State Park, and 8 miles from the Bent Creek/James River boat ramp, offering ample opportunities for further outdoor exploration, including boating and fishing. For history buffs, Appomattox Court House National Park is just 6 miles away, providing easy access to a pivotal site in American history. The proximity to these external points of interest further enhances the environmental appeal of Camp McFender.
Camp McFender offers a more focused and rustic approach to "Campgrounds & RV Parks" services, prioritizing the outdoor experience while providing essential comforts. The types of accommodations primarily include:
- RV/Tent Sites: The property offers a limited number of designated sites that can accommodate both RVs (often smaller ones, sometimes with specific amperage service like 30 AMP, though full hookups are not universally implied) and tents. These sites are designed to be private, and some are located directly on the creek, offering prime waterfront access. RV Site 1 is described as one of the largest with 180-degree views, and RV Site 4 boasts a very large private wooded area. Specific sites may offer water spigots and electric hookups (e.g., 30 AMP for RVs, 120 Volt plugs for electric tent sites).
- Primitive Tent Sites: There are also primitive tent sites available, which may not have direct water spigots or electric hookups, catering to those who prefer a more traditional, off-grid camping experience.
The services provided at Camp McFender are designed to support a comfortable, yet distinctly outdoor, stay. These include:
- Compost Toilets/Outhouses: Guests consistently praise the cleanliness and maintenance of the compost toilets/outhouses, indicating a commitment to providing well-kept facilities despite their rustic nature.
- Water Availability: Water is generally available on-site, sometimes at specific spigots at individual sites or communal points, and often provided during organized events like races.
- Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Each site typically includes a fire ring for campfires and a picnic table for outdoor dining, essential for the camping experience.
- Solar Charging: While full power hookups are not universal, solar charging facilities for phones may be available, catering to modern needs while maintaining a natural feel.
- Host Hospitality: The host, Russ, is frequently praised as a "Star Host" – highly rated, responsive, and committed to providing incredible experiences. Guests often mention receiving a friendly welcome and even goody bags upon arrival, highlighting the personalized service.
It's important to note that Camp McFender is not a full-service commercial campground with amenities like heated bathhouses, extensive general stores, or resort-style pools. Its appeal lies in its private, natural setting and the hands-on hospitality of its host.
Camp McFender's features are heavily centered around outdoor adventure and unique, nature-based activities:
- Extensive Trail System: The property boasts over 5 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails and dirt roads. These trails are described as "aggressive single track" in some areas, appealing to serious mountain bikers, but also offering scenic routes for hikers.
- Swimming Hole and Zip Line: A natural spring feeds a swimming hole, a popular feature for cooling off, and it's complemented by a zip line for added fun and adventure.
- Fishing: With two creeks on the property, there are opportunities for fishing, though specific details on catch-and-release policies or fish types are not always explicit.
- Dark Sky Viewing: The rural location and open fields make Camp McFender an excellent spot for stargazing, appealing to astrophotographers and astronomy enthusiasts.
- Dog-Friendly: Camp McFender is notably dog-friendly, allowing pets to be off-leash at the Hipcamp, a significant draw for pet owners seeking freedom for their companions.
- Event Hosting: The property occasionally hosts special events, such as endurance mountain bike races (like "2 Hours @ Camp McFender w James River Racing"), which can include additional activities like axe throwing, frisbee golf, bonfires, live music, and even haunted Halloween trails, providing unique entertainment options for participants and guests. Camping is often included as part of the race registration fee.
- Proximity to Attractions: Beyond the immediate property, its location near Holiday Lake State Park (boating, fishing), James River State Park, and Appomattox Court House National Park offers a wide range of external activities and historical exploration.
The emphasis here is on self-directed outdoor enjoyment and curated, special events that leverage the natural landscape.
Camp McFender primarily promotes itself through platforms like Hipcamp, where it receives strong recommendations (100% recommendation rate from 16 ratings and 12 reviews, as of recent data). The "Star Host" designation is a significant promotional point, assuring guests of a high level of service and responsiveness.
Key promotional highlights often include:
- "Private sites. 100% of recent Hipcampers say the sites felt private."
- "Off-leash friendly. Pets can be off-leash at this Hipcamp."
- "Over 5 miles of hiking/mountain biking trails and dirt roads."
- "Bent Creek and a natural spring with a zip line, swimming hole, and multiple rock beaches."
- "Lookout points to enjoy the sunrise, sunset, and dark sky for star and planet viewing."
- Its convenient location to Appomattox Court House National Park, Holiday Lake State Park, and James River State Park.
Booking is typically done through online platforms. Prices are generally listed per night per site. For events, race registration fees might include camping.
Important considerations for prospective campers:
- Road Conditions: Some reviews for similar private Hipcamp-style sites in rural areas suggest that access roads might be "rough" or require 4x4/AWD, particularly after rain. While not explicitly stated for Camp McFender, it's a general point to consider for properties offering secluded, natural settings.
- Basic Facilities: Guests should be prepared for a more rustic camping experience compared to commercial resorts. While outhouses are well-maintained, private flush toilets or showers at each site are not standard.
- Packing Essentials: Campers should bring their own linens, cooking supplies (if not explicitly stated for a particular site type), and other camping essentials.
- Communication: The host's responsiveness (Russ being a "Star Host") is a strong indicator of good communication for any questions or needs.
In summary, Camp McFender offers a highly recommended, private, and activity-rich camping experience in a beautiful natural setting in Appomattox, Virginia. It's an ideal choice for those who value seclusion, outdoor adventure, and personalized hospitality over resort-style amenities, and who appreciate the freedom of a truly dog-friendly environment.
