Loved it. 8 view points. Each has information on what you were looking at. Clean. 1 mile out and 1 mile back. Very well marked. Restroom at the end. Need to be sure footed
We embarked on the 90-minute guided adult walk through Gorge history—a journey that was both enlightening and scenic. Our GBRA guide was top-notch with hilarious dad jokes. Back up to GBRA guide was a Texas Master Naturalist docent bringing up the rear, ensuring we didn't wander off to join the local wildlife permanently. For more details, hop onto their website (not literally, unless you're into extreme browsing). They keep the group cozy, maxing out at 10 people—perfect for making friends or plotting your escape plan in case Bigfoot shows up. Oh, and we were bussed to the trail's peak, about 1.5 miles up, so our hike started on a high note (literally and figuratively).
This was a wonderful, easy hike. We hiked the yellow path. It is $5 per person 12 and older. The hike was 2 miles there and back on a well marked well maintained path with an outhouse at the end. You can not access the gorge from this path. In order to access the gorge, you need to book a guided tour on the green path. They offer binoculars and compasses to borrow or purchase. There are a couple of great photo opportunities. Pets are not allowed on this path.
I love this spot! I have done the self guided option as well as the 90 minute guided hike. The self guided is an easy trail, under 2 miles round trip. We participated in the scavenger hunt, which was fun. Informative signs at each stop along the trail give you information about what you’re looking at. The guided hike allows you to go down into the gorge and see things up close including dinosaur footprints and Sea creature fossils. We got ranger Joe as our tour guide and he was amazing! Lots of fun jokes to keep things light and fun. I would highly recommend checking this place out!!
Canyon Lake Gorge is an outdoor lover's paradise. At just $5 per person over 12 on self-guided hikes, it is a very affordable option for getting outside with the family. For around $20 per person, you can get a guided tour on the weekend which allows you to get up and personal with the Gorge and the fossilized dinosaur tracks and marine life from over 100 million years ago. That's a pretty great value, in my opinion! The staff here are absolutely amazing, polite, and informative. This is also a geological wonder! I've added pictures of the fault here, one of only 3 places a feature like this can be seen in North America! This is an easy hike for self-guided and a moderate hike for guided tours. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail. This is geological fun for all ages, so pack up the kids and the camera and head out! You won't be disappointed.
I did the 3 hour tour this past weekend and it was so awesome. The gorge is truly incredible and such an experience. Fossils, geology, & natural beauty --- oh my!! I did part of the general hike as well and it was also outstanding. I can't recommend this place any more.
What are hidden geologic gem this is. We took the 3 hour tour (reservations required) in March and our guide, Ranger Joe, was both informative and entertaining. His passion for the gorge was evident, and it was a delight to have him as our tour guide. Be sure and wear comfortable hiking clothes/shoes as you will be traversing rocky terrain and multiple stone stairs. Take water and snacks since it is 3 hours long. There is a break halfway through where you can refill your water container and use a composting toilet. This would be a great activity for families with children over 10 years of age.
