Great place to stay! We stayed in a small cabin with just the bed, and it was the perfect size for our short 2 day stay, with storage under the bed and great AC/heating. The hot tub was amazing for the chilly nights, I was glad they kept it open until 10:00pm. The community bathrooms were nice, a little dirty, but, again, we were only there for 2 days so they likely cleaned after we had already left. The staff was very friendly, gave us a quick rundown on everything, had free WiFi, a playground, a bounce pillow, and a short walk to the beach or to a nice diner across the street that served breakfast, lunch and dinner (we only had breakfast there, but it was really good!) It’s also in a great location in Rodanthe, so you could drive down to Avon or up to Nags Head without it being too far of a drive, about 20-30 minutes. Definitely recommend!
We had trouble deciding between the Cape Hatteras RV Park and the KOA, and wanted to share our experience from an early October stay. While the location is undeniably beautiful, we were disappointed overall. We understand it’s a harsh coastal climate, but many of the buildings, outdoor lamps, and fences had chipping paint and visible rust, giving the property a neglected feel. Our back-in site stayed muddy the entire time, especially right at the camper entrance. The Wi-Fi didn’t work at all in the section near the beach, even though that’s where many of the premium sites are. Additionally, while we appreciate that staff housing is necessary, the worker areas next to guest sites could be better maintained and kept tidier. The hot tub area was also frustrating — there’s a loud ringing noise that staff seemed aware of but haven’t addressed. The beach path felt unsafe, with a noticeable drop-off where it meets the sand. The pool was also not heated; when we called before booking, we weren’t given a clear answer about the temperature, which was disappointing. On a positive note, the glow train was one of the most fun activities we’ve seen at any KOA, and the rosé wine tasting to raise funds for breast cancer was a thoughtful and meaningful touch. This KOA has so much potential, but the lack of maintenance and attention to guest experience really stood out. While the location is great, the overall experience didn’t quite justify the premium price.
I would have always given this campground 5 stars. But not this time. Trust me, I'm an easygoing camper, so if something bothers me, it would probably bother anyone else even more. First, I arrived a little early. I really appreciated that they agreed to let me in this early. However, once I was shown to my site, I pointed out to the employee that the neighbor was practically sitting in my shade shelter, it was obvious. The employee didn't seem happy with my dissatisfaction, he told me that it would be too complicated to ask the neighbor to place his trailer correctly, he would have to move me to another site. So he contacted the lady at the front desk and asked if I could move to another site. I was finally told that the only equivalent site available was 355, which was full of water from the rain, was half the size, and directly on the edge of the street where everyone passed. So I didn't really have a choice but to keep this site and endure the neighbor's encroachment on my environment. I've traveled a lot and experienced several campsites. Normally, in a resort of this price, this lack of courtesy towards the neighbor would not have been tolerated. If I had been lucky, they could have moved me to an equivalent site, but the next guest who would have faced this situation would not have been any happier. So I paid an extra price for a shade shelter that I will not have the pleasure of using, that's what disappoints me. I don't know if the KOA administration cares about the comments provided by their best customers, but I hope that it will be taken into account constructively to ensure a better customer experience.
My family and I rented 3 deluxe cabins. They were dirty and bug roach infested. I initially rented a golf cart, but barely used it. So I returned as did my son. They refunded me the difference in my credit card but supposedly did not have the cash to give my son his money back, and he was told to come back later in the day and they would have it in an envelope for him. They did not have it and knew nothing about it. Finally the next day they refunded on a credit card. I was woken up about 1:30am with bugs walking on me, and biting me. Also the light and ac in the master bedroom did not work. When I went to report and have these fixed, the staff was rolling their eyes like I was making it up. I showed them a pic of a bug on bathroom shower curtain. So they acted to fix light and spray. The spraying did not help, I still had bugs. Also I purchased firewood early in the morning and didn’t receive. When I called at 5:30pm to asked where it was I was given the runaround about it. We decided to leave early due to the issues that we all were experiencing. The staff was rude. They were taking about us in a bad manner, which was not appreciated. One of the staff was rolling her eyes. How utterly unprofessional. When we checked out early we were told that we should never have been refunded any money for the golf carts. Really?! Today when we checked out early we were offered nothing. I paid for a day I did not use and was not given a refund for the day. Also Kai informed me in order to get money back I had to cancel 48 hours in advance, hence no refund. If you are going to visit this koa, bring cleaning supplies, roach repellent. The staff was rude, and not nice to deal with. Kai was extremely rude, she should not be in customer service at all, her skills in dealing with people are subpar.
If I could rate this place a negative review I would. We unfortunately had to cut our trip short because it was just unbearable to stay with having mold, infestation of bugs (ants, cockroaches) in our delux cabin. My family and I have stayed at koa before so we decided to try this place out for a birthday and while the scenery was beautiful the place was not. We loved that it was pet friendly but the customer service was terrible. The staff was rude and I get we have bad days but for all 4 days of the staff members being rude is a problem. There’s no need to have employees roll there eyes when we addressing there’s bug issues because we did book 3 deluxe cabins and they all were infested with bugs. Not to mention you can hear the employees mock our issues in the back. Since we checked out early we didn’t even get a refund because of not enough notice but that wasn’t mentioned to us. The employees should be thorough when customers check in because we just got handed our keys and that’s it. Also they should mention that if something is paid in cash you will not get a refund. I have never encountered that before especially at a koa because like I said we’ve stayed at other koa before. Either they need to retrain the staff or get rid of them because they all don’t seem to know what they’re doing or they just don’t care enough to address there’s problem.
