Carl Park Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For Texas RV enthusiasts and boondockers, finding a genuinely free overnight or multi-day stay along the beautiful Gulf Coast can feel like finding buried treasure. Carl Park, located near Palacios, Texas, is precisely that—a cherished, rustic, 11-acre Matagorda County park that offers unparalleled access to the Tres Palacios River and a welcoming environment for self-contained travelers.
Unlike crowded, amenity-heavy paid parks, Carl Park operates on a simple, no-frills basis, making it a favorite for those who prioritize location and saving money over full hookups. Situated just north of where the river empties into the Matagorda Bay system, it's a prime spot for fishing and casual river viewing. While it does not feature designated, numbered campsites, the park consists of a large, grassy or dirt lot space that accommodates vehicles of all sizes, including large motorhomes and fifth-wheel trailers, with plenty of room for maneuvering.
The spirit of Carl Park is one of shared public land use—it’s set up primarily for fishermen and boaters but remains a popular, well-known spot for RV and tent campers seeking a short, free coastal getaway. Visitors should understand the "free" status comes with a shared responsibility to respect the environment and manage their own waste, upholding the long-standing Texas tradition of utilizing accessible public areas.
Location and Accessibility
Carl Park is strategically situated on the banks of the Tres Palacios River, below the FM 521 bridge, approximately two miles north of where the river meets the larger Tres Palacios Bay. Its address is simply listed as Palacios, TX 77465, USA, placing it in Matagorda County, Texas.
The park's location offers easy access off a main Farm to Market road, making the approach simple for large RVs. Customer reviews confirm that even a 32-foot motorhome can easily navigate the park’s unpaved areas and make a safe turn-around. However, as is common with Texas coastal parks, the ground can become very muddy after heavy rain, so drivers should exercise caution in wet conditions, especially when parking off the central path.
The surrounding area is flat, coastal terrain, offering beautiful views of the river and the marshlands that lead into Matagorda Bay. This location provides an excellent base camp for exploring the charm of Palacios, often called the "City by the Sea," and the various nearby coastal attractions, including the Palacios City by the Sea Museum and Matagorda Bay Nature Park.
Services Offered
As a free, county-maintained recreational area, Carl Park focuses on core outdoor amenities rather than providing utility hookups. The main draw for boondockers is the ability to park overnight without charge. The public services available include:
- Free Overnight Stay: This is the primary feature. The stay limit is often debated, but most local users suggest an informal maximum stay of three (3) days, common for Texas county parks of this nature.
 - Fishing Pier: A nice fishing pier is available for public use, catering to anglers looking to catch redfish, speckled trout, and black drum common in the area's brackish waters.
 - Boat Ramp: The park provides a public boat ramp for easy access to the Tres Palacios River, ideal for boaters, kayakers, and fishermen.
 - Picnic Facilities: Scattered picnic tables are available throughout the 11-acre park area for day-use and camping.
 - Grills: Simple cooking grills are provided near the picnic areas for charcoal cooking.
 - Trash Cans: Garbage cans are present, although guests should be prepared to pack out all trash themselves if maintenance has been delayed, as noted in user reviews.

It is crucial to note that Carl Park does not offer electricity, water hookups, sewer connections, or public restrooms (beyond what is provided for day-use—users report only simple trash cans and a gravel lot). Campers must be fully self-contained and prepared to rely solely on their RV's resources.
Features / Highlights
Carl Park's best features are rooted in its simplicity, accessibility, and location on the central Texas coast:
- Prime Fishing Access: The location right on the Tres Palacios River provides excellent access for fishermen, whether casting from the pier or launching a boat.
 - Boondocking Hub: It is a well-known and accepted spot for free overnight RV camping and boondocking, making it an invaluable resource for cost-conscious Texas travelers.
 - Big-Rig Friendly: The large, open dirt/gravel lot means the park is easily accessible and navigable for even the largest motorhomes and fifth-wheel trailers.
 - Coastal Scenery: Although rustic, the park offers pleasant, flat coastal scenery and opportunities for bird-watching as the river meets the bay ecosystem.
 - Central to Palacios: Being just a short drive from Palacios, campers can easily pop into town for supplies, dining, and to experience the local culture and maritime history.

A note for visitors: the natural environment means some trash along the riverbanks is sometimes present, and the park’s general maintenance (like emptying trash cans) can be inconsistent, which is a trade-off for the free stay. This requires campers to be responsible citizens and practice good stewardship of the public land.

What is Worth Choosing
Carl Park is undeniably worth choosing for Texas RVers and travelers who embody the spirit of boondocking and free coastal adventure. Its greatest value is the simple fact that it offers a free, safe, and accessible place to park a large RV for a short duration right on the water, a rarity on the highly developed Texas coast. It is not a place for resort amenities, but rather a perfect overnight stop, a multi-day fishing base, or a stepping stone between paid campgrounds.
It is the ideal location for the self-sufficient traveler who needs easy access to the Tres Palacios River for fishing or boating and appreciates the quiet simplicity of a county park. By choosing Carl Park, you gain a prime location near Matagorda Bay without the usual price tag, allowing you to save money for local Palacios seafood and bait. The ability to accommodate large rigs easily, combined with the presence of a fishing pier and grills, cements its reputation as a valuable, no-cost spot on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Nice fishing pier. Garbage cans need to be emptied/maintained. Good for a free overnight stay.
An 11 acre park on the Tres Palacious River that offers a fishing pier, picnic tables, and grills. Unsure of length of stay that is allowed. I originally thought 24 hours like as is in most Texas parks and boating areas, but a gentleman who was also parked here says it is 3 days. Very muddy during my visit but still had no issues getting around in my 32ft motorhome. Trash along the river but that seems to be fairly normal here. join my Facebook Group A sudden leap into boondocking to read more reviews, see full videos and see hundreds of additional free places to rv camp across the u.s.a
Really nice spot to fish. You can catch fish and salt water fish here. I would have given it 5 stars if only there was a restroom available. But over all really nice fishen dock. And a great place to catch bait.
Great fishing and really nice fishing Peir. Park is nice and clean. Really nice picnic tables and grills and lots of nice shade trees. Really nice boat ramp. And great parking. The only bad thing I saw, was yhe parking lot does need pot holes fixed. And it would be nice for more places to set your fishing pole out of the walk way.
Seemed like a good place to camp for a night or two. Then I noticed that it had trash like beer bottles laying around. Must be a teenager hangout a night so I left.
