Stopped at the overlook on my road trip for a little fresh air and to stretch my legs—was not disappointed! The drive was very pretty, I was the only car in the parking lot, and the run up the stairs to that view was exhilarating. I can’t speak for the rest of the park, but the overlook was a great little spot, clean, empty, well maintained.
A beautiful park with many picnic shelters. The picnic shelter at the very end has the best views! It took us some driving around to realize the scenic overlook was not inside the park but on the main road a bit ahead of the park entrance right next to the river.
Nice stop if you are in the area. There are flights of stairs that take you directly up to the overlook itself “castle rock.” No real additional trails directly here, just in the park itself. The actual rock outcropping is blocked from actual pictures on it. But you have some views of the river and surrounding area.
We were only able to visit the lookout as there was hunting in the park. It is a beautiful overlook of the rock river. If you make the climb up to it be prepared for over a hundred steps upward. Take your time and enjoy the views. There are benches to rest on at the top if you just want to relax and take it all in. There is also another overlook right by the river which is a much shorter climb. Take a short stroll along the bank of the river. It is a great place to stop and enjoy the beauty of the river.
Lovely place with several miles of hiking through forests, prairies, and meadows. Perfect summer or fall getaways. About 4 miles if you do all of the loops (see Castle Rock North Trails on AllTrails). Generally rated as easy as its a loop trail and mostly flat with only about 400 feet of elevation gain here and there. Trails are easy to follow and well-maintained despite the low traffic. The observation "deck" is decent with a good view of a valley with tall grasses and pretty flowers in the spring/summer. Should be gorgeous views with all the foliage changes. Generally fairly quiet with the occasional sounds of trucks from highway 2 yet not many people. Scenic and well-groomed/kept picnic area with a roofed and concrete-floor eating area (multiple tables). Rustic restrooms at the start of the trails near the picnic area.
