Cave Campground Introduce
Welcome to Cave Campground, located on E Well Trail, Lincoln, NM 88338. As a part of the 'Campgrounds & RV Parks' category, this campground offers a peaceful and free camping experience with beautiful surroundings.
Cave Campground is praised for its peaceful and clean environment, offering a large space for campers to relax and enjoy nature. There are technically 4-5 campsites available, including 3 pull-through spots and one turn-out. Three of the spots feature gazebos with picnic tables, providing shade and comfort, while two spots do not.
The campground is well-maintained, with a spotless pit toilet and regular garbage pickup by the amazing camp host. Each campsite has a fire pit and flat gravel areas, making it convenient for setting up tents or RVs.
Unfortunately, the cave itself is currently under a moratorium due to white-nose syndrome in bats. However, the campground offers access to numerous hiking trails with fantastic views of the Capitan mountains. The campground is about 10 miles outside of Capitan, NM, providing a quiet retreat away from the main road.
The campground can be busy on weekends but is generally quiet during the week. It offers free camping for up to 14 days and has reliable 4G Verizon cell coverage (no T-Mobile). Visitors consistently report that the campground is clean and well-stocked.
For those visiting the area, Capitan offers several attractions, including the Oso Grill, known for its amazing scratch-made food, the Smokey the Bear museum, and Fort Stanton, a historic fort with tours. These attractions make Cave Campground a convenient base for exploring the region.
Cave Campground offers peaceful and free camping with scenic views, hiking trails, and clean facilities. Enjoy gazebos, fire pits, and a convenient location near Capitan attractions. Limited spots and cave moratorium.

Such a peaceful, clean, and large space to hang out. 3 gazebos with picnic tables under 2. From our count there are technically 4 spots. 3 pull through and one sort of turn out. Camp host is amazing and picks up your garbage every other day. Spotless pit toilet. Unfortunate that the cave is now on a moratorium for white nose syndrome in bats. Lots of hiking trails around with fantastic views!
Nice small little campground about 10 miles outside of Capitan, NM. There are 5 official spots, one is very close to the one we were in (as you can see in the video) so I will call it 4 spots unless you have friends you are camping with. Two of the spots do not have shade pavilions, 3 do. Garbage cans are at the campsites with coverings and there is one pit toilet for the campground. Fairly flat gravel sites and fire pits. This campground is a bit busy on the weekends but is very quiet as it's off the main road a ways. While we were here, the garbage was emptied regularly and the bathroom was clean and stocked. We were very impressed! Free camping for up to 14 days, very clean campground and great views of the Capitan mountains. 4G Verizon cell coverage, no T-Mobile. We would definitely stay here again. ***Side note...if you go into Capitan there are a few things you definitely need to check out. One is Oso Grill which is the place to eat in town. They have amazing food and make it all from scratch. Second is Smokey the Bear museum. Pretty cool little museum with outside walking area to see where Smokey the Bear is buried. Third is Fort Stanton, an old fort that you can tour and see an amazing piece of history. You can even walk inside some of their buildings.
Came here in early April 2021 on the suggestion of the hosts at Jagger's Campground about 2 miles away. The price is right (free) and the 2nd largest cave in NM is literally IN the campsite! It's closed (fence), but still very cool. Scenery is nice and it's super secluded. No water, but the vault toilet was cleaner than my home bathroom.
Great Fee Free Campground in the Mtns just above BLM Campground w/ Electric and water for 20$ / 10 with National Park Pass !! Near Ft. Stanton
It’s like a little hideout I didn’t know you drive by and you think it’s just ATV trails and then you look and there is a little campground back there enjoyed our evening peaceful night awesome morning wake up with coffee quiet
