Great camping spot near The Oregon National Caves National Monument. Stayed at campsite #8 and there's a grouping of 4 trees adjacent to the stream that worked great for hammock camping. The campsite was $10 per night and included an outhouse, of decent condition in pit toilet style, potable water near the pay station, a rather ground-sunken picnic table, a 1/4 circle campfire fit (did not use personally as fire season), and plenty of flat/cleared space for tent camping as needed. There was even a rather bold baby chipmunk that was quite determined to turn out our pockets, regardless of our apparently lackluster attempts to "shoo" the little creature away. Overall a great campsite and will definitely be stopping by again in the future for another hike through the caves.
My family and I stayed in site #8 for 3 nights and have 0 complaints. There were 1 or 2 other small groups/solo campers that stayed for a night or 2 but that was it! We arrived Sunday, July 14th and left on Wednesday thr 17th. 3 miles from the caves, about 15 from Cave Junction and all the lush forest you could ever want. Quiet, clean, cute and relatively private sites and each site had a bear box, fire pit and a wood pile for burning (we went during fire season so couldn't have a fire but the gesture was appreciatwd). Our site set right on Cave Creek and had a little swimming hole filled with salamanders and fish fry. Only $10 a night with a 2 car limit. Would 100% visit again! Side note: travel trailers are not allowed past Graback Campground at the bottom of the mountain. Probably for good reason as the road is pretty narrow and twisty (I loved it).
Not a good experience, camp host had a "No Trespassing" sign posted about 10 feet from his tent. If you had a question or needed him for anything, you had to holler from the road and hope he hears you and comes out....usually, he did not answer. One time he did come out - but unfortunately the answer he provided to our question was not helpful at all. Makes one wonder where the National Park Service gets their horrible camp hosts, he might be an alright person but camp host is definitely not a good job fit.
I was there the day after 4th of July (a Friday night), and only 4 out of 18 campsites were taken. Camping is $10 cash/check only with a self-service pay station. There are pit toilets and water spigots, although I don't know if I'd trust the water there. Located about half an hour from cave junction and 15 minutes from the caves Camp is quiet and secluded, with a background sound of rushing water. If you plan on doing a morning cave tour, this is a perfect place to camp
Comparing this campgound to Grayback (down the road). Found Cave Creek to be cold, dark, and damp, located as it is in a rather narrow canyon. There were a few bear boxes for food, maybe one box for every six campsites. 5 stars for having open private sites, there were only two taken at 7pm on a Friday evening in the summer. But one star for families, the river was located down a steep ravine from many campsites, mosquitoes were omnipresent, reserved tickets on sites from several days before were not removed. Mostly, I didn't want to walk four campsites away to get to my coffee for the morning. Grayback, in comparison, was busier but not nearly filled, has no bear issues, was sunnier and had swimming sites in the creek. Couples might choose Cave Creek for privacy, families with younger children should choose Grayback.
