Cave Mountain Lake Campground Introduce
Cave Mountain Lake Campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty and convenience for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of Virginia's wilderness. Nestled near Natural Bridge Station, this charming campground provides a perfect base for exploring the surrounding mountains and forests.
The campground features well-maintained facilities that cater to both tent campers and RVs. One of its standout features is the availability of clean, flush toilets with sinks—a rare find in many backcountry campsites. The hot showers are also highly praised by visitors for their cleanliness and reliability. These amenities make Cave Mountain Lake Campground a favorite among travelers who appreciate comfort without compromising on nature.
Campers will enjoy the rustic charm of the sites, which offer a mix of shade and open spaces. While there are no electrical or water hookups available, the campground provides a free dump station with potable water, making it convenient for longer stays. The friendly camp host, Melissa, ensures that the grounds remain tidy and welcoming throughout your stay.
One of the highlights of visiting Cave Mountain Lake Campground is the opportunity to explore the Wildcat Mountain Trail, a challenging 5-mile hike that starts and ends within the campground. This trail is perfect for experienced hikers looking for a rigorous workout amidst stunning natural scenery. While the trail can be demanding, it rewards visitors with breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment.
Customer feedback highlights the campground's well-maintained facilities and serene setting. Many guests appreciate the clean restrooms and hot showers, which are often compared favorably to those found in national parks and forests. However, some visitors have noted that noise levels can be high during peak hours, particularly after quiet time begins at 10 pm. This suggests that while the campground is lively, it may not be ideal for those seeking complete solitude.

I have stayed in National Park and National Forest campgrounds literally all over the U.S., and I can say that the bathrooms in Cave Mountain Lake Campground were the cleanest I've ever seen in a National Park or National Forest campground. They also have actual flush toilets and sinks, which is unusual, because most of the time, all you get is a pit toilet with no running water. The campground also has good hot showers, which were also in very good, clean condition. The camp host Melissa was really nice and did a great job keeping the place tidy and clean. The campground is quite nice and the sites are nicely rustic. There are no hookups, but there is a free dump station with potable water at the entrance to the campground. There is a hiking trail called Wildcat Mountain Trail that starts and ends in the campground. Be warned that it gets pretty strenuous and the sign says "approximately 4 miles", but we're pretty sure it's probably closer to five. Do not attempt the whole trail unless you're in good physical and cardiovascular health. We're both in pretty good shape, and it took us slightly more than three hours, and we were whipped when we were finally done!
This is a wonderful campground. The facilities are well maintained. Only problem is that people came at approximately 9 pm and quite time starts at 10 pm. They were so so loud and obnoxious until about 11:30 pm. Kids were running around hollering until then also. There should have been a camp host riding around at 10 pm when quiet time begins to make sure all people are following the rules. Some of use go to relax and you can't when all that is going on.
Sites are spacious and clean bathhouse. Hosts are friendly and helpful. Great hiking and close to the lake beach which has beach toys for kids. Great for digital detox. Please book a site before going. No cellphone reception.
My wife and I camped out here for the first time. Close to the bathrooms and water spigot. Stream level was low due to no rain in a while. Overall it was a great experience. BTW: the ground is extremely hard for whatever reason. Bent some tent stakes trying to get them in the ground.
The open air covered pavilion near the lake is a large and beautiful log structure, great for picnic and gatherings. The camp ground is quiet and nice
